Mary Newgeon Hawkes Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

    CROMWELL, CT, October 13, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to name Mary Newgeon Hawkes a Lifetime Achiever. An accomplished listee, Ms. Hawkes celebrates many years' experience in her professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes she has accrued in her field. Ms. Hawkes is a retired minister and educator who dedicated 50 years to ecumenical Christian spirituality and religious education. She is also a prolific author of books on religious music and festivals, as well as an accomplished organist and humanitarian. Ms. Hawkes retired from the ministry in 2008, but still acts as president and newsletter editor of the Adam Hawkes Family Association. Her ancestor was the original settler of Saugus, Massachusetts and the great-great-great grandfather of the second president of the United States, John Adams.

Ms. Hawkes was born in Thessaloniki, Greece to William Emory and Jessie Newgeon Hawkes. She studied the music organ at Doane College, receiving an A.B. in 1956 and matriculating at Hartford Seminary to earn an M.A. in religious education in 1958. Ms. Hawke became director of Christian education at the United Churches of Christ at Middletown and Hartford, Connecticut. In 1967, she traveled to Hamburg and Berlin in Germany as a ecumenical church worker with the German Protestant Church. When she returned in 1969, she resumed her post as director in Connecticut, New York, and Michigan, serving until 1976. In 1980 Ms. Hawkes was ordained to the ministry of the United Church of Christ, and in 1983 she received an Ed.D. in religious education jointly from the Columbia University Teachers College and the Union Theological Seminary. While earning the degree, she also served as a secretary with the education programs of the United Church Board in New York City. Ms Hawkes received the 1981 Doane Builder Award from Doane College.

Now officially ordained and trained in religious scholarship, Ms. Hawkes served as an interim minister for much of the late '80s and '90s. She briefly managed the nonprofit Ingraham House Retreat Center before becoming a pastor in North Bennington, Vermont. In 1998, she became pastor of the First Congregational Church at the Deer River and United Community Church in Carthage, New York. She also served as an education partner with the New York Conference of the United Church of Christ, as a resource manager for the United Church of Christ New York Women group, and as president of the Village Ecumenical Ministry in Carthage. From 2006 to 2008, Ms. Hawke was the acting coordinator of the Educational Ministries Center Congregational Church in Brattleboro, Vermont.

Through the '80s, Ms. Hawkes kept up a stream of published works, including the hymnal "Sing of Life and Faith." She also co-authored "Festivals of Christmas," and served as an editor for "Songs of Mary Nations," "Sing to God," and "Go and Tell." Ms. Hawkes is charitably affiliated with the American Association of University Women, the Alban Institute, the Children's Defense Fund, Amnesty International, the Southern Poverty Law Center, Common Cause, Habitat for Humanity, the New Hampshire Peace Foundation, and Kappa Delta Pi. She was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in the World, and the 2002 to 2003 volume of Who's Who of American Women.
