Mr. Oberman began his career as an associate for Daniel, Duncan & Claiborne, in the same town where he practices to this day. Over the next four decades, he gained experience on the intricacies of DUI law and is now the Managing Partner of Oberman & Rice Trial Attorneys.
Forming his current firm in 2010, Mr. Oberman defends clients charged with various crimes--everything from homicide down to speeding. His specialty, however, is DUI defense.
Recognized by the National College for DUI Defense as the first attorney in Tennessee to be designated as a Board Certified Specialist in the area of DUI Defense Law, Mr. Oberman is also one of the few attorneys in the nation to have been certified to administer the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Standardized Field Sobriety Tests.
To date, Mr. Oberman has represented more than 2,000 DUI clients charged with the offense. Since 1993, he can also be found teaching at the University of Tennessee College of Law, where he serves as an adjunct professor, a position he has held since 1996 following a brief term as an adjunct associate professor.
In 1991, his first book, "DUI: The Crime & Consequences in Tennessee," was published and has been updated every year since then. In 2003, Mr. Oberman became co-author with Lawrence Taylor of the national treatise "Drunk Driving Defense." It, too, is updated annually and is now in its eighth edition. Both books are used extensively by judges, practicing lawyers and law enforcement officers. The United States Supreme Court has even cited "Drunk Driving Defense" in several of its published opinions. Mr. Oberman is a prolific writer, having authored or co-authored a number of articles for a variety of professional publications, including The National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers' "The Champion," as well as the Journal of Forensic Sciences, among others.
Mr. Oberman has lectured, served as a guest speaker, and led workshops for lawyers and law students for a number of organizations and universities. These now total over 130 times in over 30 states, the District of Columbia and three foreign countries, including the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA, on the topic of courtroom testimony.
Mr. Oberman has served his community well. He spent time as the president and on the Board of Directors for the Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee, and was president of Project First Offender. He also served on the Board of Directors for the Knoxville Legal Aid Society, the Arnstein Jewish Community Center, and various other organizations. In 1995, he became a founding member of The National College for DUI Defense, Inc., where he served on the Board of Regents from 1999 until 2011.
Moreover, Mr. Oberman is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and has served as chair or co-chair of the DUI committee for the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers since 1995.
Mr. Oberman has received countless awards, including those for his Outstanding Faculty Contributions at the University of Tennessee College of Law, The Erwin-Taylor Award for lifetime accomplishments and contributions to DUI defense by the National College for DUI Defense, and a Leadership Award from the Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education and Specialization. Mr. Oberman received a BA in Psychology at Auburn University and a JD at the University of Tennessee. He was admitted to practice law in Tennessee in 1980, followed by later admissions to the Supreme Court of Tennessee, Tennessee Criminal Court of Appeals, Tennessee Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Tennessee, the Fourth and Sixth Circuit for the U.S. Court of Appeals, and the Supreme Court of the United States.
