Robert E. Tokheim, PhD Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Dedication in Science

Dr. Tokheim is an associate director of the Poulter Laboratory in the Advanced Technology and Systems Division of SRI International

MENLO PARK, CA, October 13, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Robert E. Tokheim, PhD has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Dr. Tokheim has been a prolific contributor to physics and electrical engineering. He has been a significant contributor to the shock-wave physics research in Poulter Laboratory at SRI International--a non-profit research company in Menlo Park known for groundbreaking work in turning "bold visions into real-world products and practices." He has developed many shock wave constitutive-relation and equation-of-state computational models based on material characterization experiments for solid, porous, and composite materials under various quasi-static, impact, and irradiative source loadings, as well as computational debris modeling for large laser and plasma-radiation-source machines. In his previous professional career, he was known for his many contributions to microwave wide-band tunable filter devices, including the discovery of nonreciprocal line-coupled microwave ferrimagnetic filters, and optimum thermal compensation axes in YIG and GaYIG ferrimagnetic spheres.

Born in Eastport, Maine, to Edward George and Ruth Lillian Tokheim, Dr. Tokheim attended the California Institute of Technology to earn a BSEE with honor in 1958, followed by an MSEE in 1959. He joined Hansen Physics Laboratories at Stanford University as a research assistant while working toward the Degree of Engineer, followed by a PhD in Electrical Engineering with Physics Minor from Stanford. His dissertation was entitled "Saturation Phenomena in Zn2Y Ferrite at Frequencies Below Resonance," following his thesis on "Diode-Loaded Resonant Circuits" for the engineer degree. With these significant qualifications, Dr. Tokheim was welcomed as a microwave engineer at Watkins-Johnson Co., where he was named head of the ferromagnetic research and development department in 1966. In 1973, he joined SRI International to work in the shock-wave physics field, and became an Associate Director of Poulter Laboratory from 1998 until his his retirement in 2017.

Dr. Tokheim has been a frequent presenter at technical conferences, a prolific contributor to research publications, as well as reports to many US companies, Government Laboratories and Agencies, including being co-author of the "Tutorial Handbook on X-Ray Effects on Materials and Structures." He is a lifetime member of the IEEE, and a member of the American Physical Society, Tau Beta Pi, Sigma Xi, and Toastmasters International. In addition to contributing his time to Toastmasters, he enjoys cultural and sports events, financial investment, writing poetry, and religious study.

Dr. Tokheim identifies as a Christian Scientist, and is active in his local church. He also enjoys spending time with family, which includes his wife, Diane Green Tokheim, and his children, Shirley Diane, William Robert, David Eric, and Heidi Jean, and his ten grandchildren.
