Specializing in developmental pediatrics, Dr. Burgess handles the diagnosis and pharmacological treatment for children, adolescents and young adults with attention deficit disorder, autism and other behavioral disturbances. A developmental pediatrician with the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, he is certified in pediatrics and developmental-behavioral pediatrics through the American Board of Pediatrics, and holds medical licenses in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Colorado and Louisiana. At the present moment, he manages a child evaluation center in New Jersey. Funded by the state, the center combines the efforts of psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers and nurses to enable any child to be seen. Dr. Burgess takes great pride in his involvement with this initiative.
Prior to pursuing a career in health care, Dr. Burgess attended the University of Illinois, where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1969. He went on to complete an MD at the University of Wisconsin in 1973, as well as a residency in pediatrics at Tulane University. While completing a fellowship in child development at the University of Colorado, Dr. Burgess considered himself fortunate to work with very knowledgeable and skilled mentors. He chose to specialize in special needs while completing the residency at Tulane University. Dr. Burgess served as an assistant professor with the university between 1977 and 1978, as well as 1980 and 1985. Beginning in 1985, Dr. Burgess served as the medical director of the Exceptional Family Member Program for the Fitzsimons Army Medical Center in Aurora, Colorado. Additionally, Dr. Burgess served as assistant clinical professor, assistant professor and associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Colorado between 1986 and 1997, and since 1997, he has been a clinical associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Burgess has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including America's Top Doctors, Philadelphia Magazine, New Jersey Monthly: Top Doctors, New Jersey Life: Top Pediatric Specialists and Who's Who in the West. In addition, he was selected for inclusion in South Jersey Magazine: Top Doctors and Inside Jersey: Top Doctors for Children. Most recently, Dr. Burgess was awarded a Child Evaluation Center Service Grant by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. He maintains involvement with a wide range of medical organizations, including the Society for Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, Society for Pediatric Research, and American Academy for Cerebral Palsy and Developmental Medicine.
