Only one year after earning his Bachelor's degree in 1959, Dr. Colston entered the field of education at Attucks High School in Hollywood, Florida. An instructor and department chair of social studies for four years, he also spent four years as the high school swimming coach. Leaving secondary education behind him in 1966, he accepted a political science instructor position at Fort Valley State University and has since led a very successful career in higher education. Dr. Colston has flourished at teaching political science at Southern University, the University of Detroit, Dillard University, Delta College, Tennessee State University, North Carolina Central University, and, beginning in 1992, at Georgia Southwestern State University until retirement in 1997. In addition to his university teaching positions, Dr. Colston served for seven and one half years as an Associate Director at the Executive Seminar Center, US Office of personnel management in Oak Ridge Tennessee. As well, he was a Teaching Associate in the Department of Political Science at The Ohio State University from 1968 to 1971.
The former president of the Broward County Council for the Social Studies, Dr. Colston was also a member of the constitution committee for the Florida State Teachers Association, chairman of the human relations council for Georgia Southwestern State University, and, more recently an Honorary Director General for the International Biographical Center in Cambridge in 2011. A longstanding member of the American Political Science Association, where Dr. Colston also served on the committee on the status of blacks in the profession from 1977 to 1980, and is a member of the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress, American Society for the Study of Public Administration, Association for the Study of African American Life and History, International Platform Association, Center for The State of Congress and the Presidency, Pi Sigma Alpha, Alpha Phi Gamma, and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He is also an honorary fellow of the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library. Dr. Colston has contributed several articles to professional journals on politics and the black experience. Additionally, he has conducted an extensive amount of research on the life and career of Dr. Mays since 1984, resulting in the 2002 book, "Dr. Benjamin E. Mays Speaks: Representative Speeches of a Great American Orator," and the 2011 book "A Long Journey: Benjamin E. Mays Speaks on the Struggle for Social Justice in America."
Dr. Colston previously earned a BA at Morehouse College, an MA at Atlanta University, and a Ph.D. at The Ohio State University. The recipient of numerous awards and achievement, some of these include a 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award, a 2006 50 Years of Service Award, and a 1997 Outstanding Faculty Award from Georgia Southwestern State University. He was also a Morehouse College scholarship recipient, a Ford Foundation fellow, and was the recipient of a Southern Fellowship Fund. He has been named to more than 30 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in American Politics, Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who in the World. and honorary Fellow John F. Kennedy Presidential Library 1986. Dr. Colston has been married to Doris Marie Yelverton since 1976, and has one daughter, Deirdre. He loves sports, photography, and reading. Active in his community, he has enjoyed spending time as a former member of the board of management for the northwestern branch of the YMCA in Detroit, former member of the government subcommittee task force for the City of Midland, Michigan, and as a former member of the City of Oak Ridge Convention and Visitors Bureau Board.
