Ronald L. Van Heertum, MD, Named a Lifetime Achiever by Marquis Who's Who

The vice president of molecular imaging at Bioclinica, Inc. since 2012, he is responsible for the management and implementation of all aspects of the molecular imaging program. Spending many years in academia, he is also the former professor and executive vice chairman/CAO of the department of radiology at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and the former director of nuclear medicine and positron emission tomography (PET). Involved in many clinical trials in oncology, neurology, and psychiatry, Dr. Van Heertum established an international reputation in SPECT and PET imaging during his many years in research.

Today, Dr. Van Heertum is regarded as an internationally renowned radiologist who also has extensive experience in nuclear cardiology. With expertise that spans from radiology to molecular PET, physiology, and anatomy, he has dedicated his entire career to this very interesting and challenging area in medicine.

As a child, Dr. Van Heertum was greatly influenced by his grandfather, a physician who practiced in Germany and the U.S. Remembering how he would sit with him and look into his microscope, his grandfather later willed it to him, asking him to put it to good use in the future. Keeping his promise, Dr. Van Heertum has become a well-known and respected doctor in the United States. Prior to coming to Columbia University, he worked at St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center as the chief of the nuclear medicine section, as an attending physician in the departments of radiology and medicine, and as the assistant director in the department of radiology.

Spending many years in academia, Dr. Van Heertum taught at University of the Pacific, in addition to teaching at Columbia University, State University of New York, New York University, and New York Medical College. He has also consulted for various facilities, including the Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens, the Long Island College Hospital, for The Oxford Project to Investigate Memory and Aging, and for the department of clinical pharmacology at Oxford University, among others.

Dr. Van Heertum was a visiting professor at Brooke Army Medical Center, Howard University Medical College, the University of Puerto Rico Medical Center, Wash. University, and Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Some of his best memories and proudest moments, Dr. Van Heertum noted, was the time he spent in the classroom. Many of his former students still keep in touch with him, making him feel both proud and humble.

After completing a BA at Gettysburg College in 1962 and an MD at Rutgers University Medical School in 1966, Dr. Van Heertum interned at Hackensack Hospital in N.J. before completing his residency in radiology and fellowship in radiology and nuclear medicine at St. Vincent's Hospital and Medical Center in New York and later at SUNY, Syracuse, NY. He is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical Examiners, the American Board of Radiology and the ABNM. He was also later a member and chairman of the American Board of Nuclear Medicine, and chairman of the American College of Radiology Nuclear Medicine Accreditation Program, Dr. Van Heertum is also a fellow of the American College of Radiology where he also served in various other capacities, and a fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine where he has been serving as secretary of the nuclear medicine section.

Also active as a as a member of the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Radiological Society of North America, the Society of Nuclear Medicine, and the New York Roentgen Society, Dr. Van Heertum has authored more than 200 publications in his field, and was the editor for the book, "Brain Imaging," which is now in its fourth edition.

The recipient of numerous research grants in his field throughout his career, Dr. Van Heertum received the Berson Yalow Award in 2008 and the Holman Kaplan Award in 2006 from the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging. He has also been included in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the East.

Dr. Van Heertum has four children and two grandchildren. He loves to travel, read, collect Japanese woodblock prints, and spend time with his children, and grandchildren.
