For the last 55 years, Dr. Harvey has devoted her life to every grade of education, serving the last 14 years as a religious educator and pastor. Though she is Methodist, her area of study extends to every branch of Christianity, and she was awarded the 2000 Dr. Grant S. Shockley Memorial Achievement Award from the Interdenominational Theological Center. Her theological journey has taken her from civil service to the hallowed hills of Jerusalem.
In 1962, Dr. Harvey earned a Bachelor of Arts from Paine College in Augusta, Georgia. She worked as a teacher at Buckholt Elementary School and Atlanta Public Schools until 1996, earning a Master of Arts, cum laude, from Atlanta University in 1969. From 1996 to 1998, Dr. Harvey also served as an educational consultant for Atlanta Public Schools.
During this period, she applied herself to various skills, and in 1997, she earned a PhD, summa cum laude, from LaSalle University in Mandeville, Louisiana. From 2001 to 2003, she worked as a member of the Task Force of the Faith Based Initiative in a bipartisan cooperation between Senator Donzella James, a Democrat, and Representative Clint Smith, a Republican. In 2003, she took up a post at Paine College as an assistant professor.
After a dedicated career nurturing generations of young minds, Dr. Harvey turned her attention to nurturing their spirits as well. In 1963, she had served as a director of the National Council of Churches summer program for migrant children, and in 2001, she earned a Master of Divinity, cum laude, from Gammon Theological Seminary. In 2007, she was ordained as a minister, and served as pastor at St. Mark United Methodist Church from 2008 to 2011 and at Areal Bowen United Methodist Church from 2011- 2014.
At the 1996 Committee for the Atlanta Olympic Games, she served with the Christian Prayer Ministries to transport visitors of all religious faiths. She has visited with two of her seminary professors to a Christian ministry in Zimbabwe, and has been in the audience of Pope John Paul II.
Dr. Harvey's services as an educator and a theologian have been honored by more than 100 awards, trophies, and plaques, including the 2009 Woman of Conference by the Manchester College in Oxford, England. She also received the 2000 James and Emma Todd Achievement Award, and received honorable citations from President Bill Clinton and President Barack Obama. Furthermore, Dr. Harvey was selected for inclusion in six volumes of Who's Who in America from 2011 to 2016. She is a member of the National Storytellers Association and is an elder of the United Methodist North Georgia Conference.
