Dr. Tomizuka currently serves as the Cheryl and John Neerhout Junior Distinguished Professor of the University of California, Berkeley, a position he has held for 19 years. Having worked at the University for more than 40 years, Dr. Tomizuka currently teaches as a professor of control theory in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, and he served previously as the Roscoe and Elizabeth Hughes Professor from 1996 to 1997. Other positions Dr. Tomizuka has held at the establishment include a six-year term as associate professor, as well as a six-year term as an assistant professor, which was his very first position in academia.
Dr. Tomizuka received a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1974 and a Master of Science from Keio University in 1970. He serves as an associate editor on the International Federation of Automatic Control from 1993 to 2000. One of Dr. Tomizuka's proudest accomplishments is in having supervised about 115 PhD students to graduation. In 1974, Dr. Tomizuka also served as a research associate at Keio University in Japan. He has also published multiple articles in professional journals and has received awards for his research on mechanical control systems.
Dr. Tomizuka is a life fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and he previously served the organization as chairman of the Dynamic System and Control Division from 1986 to 1987. Furthermore, he served as the technical editor of the Journal of Dynamic Systems Measurement and Control from 1988 to 1993. He previously served as an associate editor of IEEE Control System Magazine from 1986 to 1988, and later served as editor-in-chief of IEEE/ASME Transactions on Mechatronics from 1997 to 1999. He was also a member of the science committee of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers from 1993 to 2000.
Dr. Tomizuka has been honored as a grantee of the National Science Foundation since 1993, and previously received grants from the years 1976 to 1978, 1981 to 1983, and 1986 to 1989. He is also a grantee of the State of California which awarded him in 2004, as well as in 1984 to 1986, and 1988 to 1993. The Technical Committee on Mechatronic Systems of the International Federation of Automatic Control honored him with the Lifetime Achievement Award as an accomplished member of his field. He has been featured in Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Tomizuka is the son of Makoto and Shizuko (Nagatome) Tomizuka. His father, also a successful engineer, inspired him to pursue his interests in mechanical engineering. Dr. Tomizuka has been married to Miwako Tomizawa for more than 45 years. They have two children, Lica and Yumi.
