Drawing upon more than 30 years of professional experience, Dr. Spicer currently serves Oklahoma State University as a professor. A dedicated animal scientist, he is widely renowned for completing research in the areas of leptin receptor in the ovary and insulin-like growth action in the ovary, among other studies. A respected authority in the areas of animal science, research and education, Dr. Spicer has contributed numerous articles to professional journals pertaining to his areas of expertise. In addition, he served as a member of the editorial board with the Journal of Animal Science from 1993 to 1995.
Prior to entering a career in animal science, Dr. Spicer attended the University of Minnesota, where he received a Bachelor of Science in 1977. He went on to complete a Master of Science through the University of Idaho in 1979 and a PhD through Michigan State University in 1984. Upon completing formal education, Dr. Spicer joined Pennsylvania State University as an instructor, a position he held for four years before accepting a role as an assistant professor with Oklahoma State University. By 1993, he was promoted to the position of associate professor, and since 1998, he has served the university as a professor. Dr. Spicer also briefly held the position of visiting professor with Stanford University in 2005.
Dr. Spicer has received numerous grants throughout the course of his career, including several from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. He was named the recipient of the Oklahoma State University Regents Teaching Award in 2010. In addition, Dr. Spicer was selected for inclusion in the 63rd edition of Who's Who in America, which was published in 2008. He was named the recipient of the Pfizer Animal Health Physiology Award by the American Dairy Science Association in 2004.
In an effort to remain active and engaged in the field of animal science, Dr. Spicer maintains involvement with the American Dairy Science Association, Endocrine Society and American Society of Animal Scientists. He is also a member of Sigma Xi, where he previously served as the organization's president from 1999 to 2000.
