In this position, he is noted for expertise and knowledge in the areas of intelligent manufacturing, enterprise information systems, and robotics and automation. In addition, Dr. Bi is credited with the development of an automated programming system for robotic systems and the development of parallel kinetic machine tools. He has contributed nearly 100 articles to journals pertaining to his areas of focus, in addition to completing dozens of scientific papers, presentations, lectures, technical reports and conference publications. Dr. Bi's work has been cited more than 2,400 times.
A recognized authority in the engineering community, Dr. Bi is a senior member of the IEEE and has participated in numerous funded projects for more than 20 years. His most recent project, entitled "Program of International Collaborative Team of Advanced Robotics and Automation," is slated for completion in 2018. The project is co-sponsored by Foshan Municipality and Guangdong University of Technology of China.
Prior to pursuing a scientific career, Dr. Bi received a Bachelor of Science from Harbin University of Science and Technology in 1987. He went on to attend the Harbin Institute of Technology, where he completed a Master of Science in 1991 and PhD in 1994. Dr. Bi completed an additional PhD at the University of Saskatchewan in 2002. Since the inception of his career, he has held positions with three leading international institutions: the National Science Council in Canada, Northern Ireland Technology Centre, and National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Dr. Bi has contributed to a variety of industry-related publications, including the International Journal of Robotics Applications and Technologies, Journal of Intelligent Systems and Applications, and Enterprise Information Systems. He previously served on the editorial board of the Journal of Industrial Information Integration, Industrial Robot and ISRN Journal of Robotics.
As an educator, Dr. Bi has taught a variety of courses in mechanical engineering from the freshman to graduate level, such as solid modeling, measurement and instrumentation, kinematics and dynamics of machinery, design of machine elements, manufacturing processes and advanced finite element analysis. At his university, he serves on the International Education Advisory Committee, ETCS Faculty Assembly and ETCS Nominating Committee.
Throughout the course of his career, Dr. Bi has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the World. He has received numerous awards, including the IPFW Outstanding Research Award, ETCS Research Excellence Award and ETCS Wireless Faculty Award. Dr. Bi was recently named an IPFW Featured Faculty for Research Excellence, as well as Researcher of the Year by the Fort Wayne Chapter of Sigma Xi.
