Dr. Sadoway was born in Toronto, in Ontario, Canada, and holds a B.A.Sc in engineering science, an M.A.Sc. in chemical mettalurgy, and a PhD in chemical metallurgy from the University of Toronto. He recently received a 2013 D.Eng., honoris causa, from his alma mater and a 2014 doctor honoris causa from the NTNU Norwegian University of Science and Technology. Dr. Sadoway entered professional teaching with the University of Toronto, and in 1977 he joined MIT as a postdoctoral fellow on a NATO postdoctoral research fellowship. He was made a full professor in 1992 with the department of materials science and engineering, and has been honored by MIT with a profusion of awards, notably as a MacVicar Faculty Fellow from 1995 to 2005 and the recipient of a 1997 Bose Award for Teaching. He is the recipient of Graduate Student Council Teaching Awards at MIT in 1982, 1984, 1987, 1988, and 1993, as well as the recipient of an AT&T Faculty Fellowship in Industrial Ecology and a Professor T.B. King Memorial Award from the undergraduate students of the MIT department of materials science and engineering.
Dr. Sadoway is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Chemical Society, the Minerals, Metals and Materials Society, the Electrochemical Society, the Materials Research Society, the Iron and Steel Society, and the International Society of Electrochemistry, as well as an elected member of the Norwegian Academy of Technology and Science. A contributor to more than 170 scientific papers in the field, Dr. Sadoway has also worked for the Journal of Materials Research as an associate editor. He holds 24 U.S. patents, as well as patents in Canada, Europe, Asia, and Australia for rechargeable batteries, electric vehicles, and other sustainable future technologies.
