Karen Wylie Pryor Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

    WATERTOWN, MA October 27, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Ms. Karen Wylie Pryor with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. The daughter of Philip Gordon Wylie and Sally Ondeck, Ms. Pryor was born on May 14, 1932 in New York, New York. On June 25, 1954, she married Taylor A. Pryor, whom she later divorced in 1973. Together, the couple raised three children: Tedmund, Michael, and Gale. Ms. Pryor later married Jon M. Lindbergh on May 14, 1983.

In 1954, Ms. Pryor graduated from Cornell University with a BA in English. She completed her postgraduate education at the University of Hawai'i from 1957 to 1959. After her postgraduate studies, Ms. Pryor founded Sea Life Park Oceanarium in Honolulu, Hawaii in 1960, where she remained as curator until 1971.

Ms. Pryor was a freelancer writer since 1963 and a marine mammal consultant since 1970. From 1973 to 1976, Ms. Pryor was a copywriter at Fawcett­McDermott. Her writing career continued as a drama critic on the Honolulu advertiser from 1971 to 1975. She then continued her postgraduate education at New York University between 1977 and 1979.

From 1979 to 1982, Ms. Pryor studied at Rutgers University. During this period, she was a scientific advisor of the US Tuna Foundation, as well as a consultant of the National Science Foundation under NASA and the National Geographic Society. From 1984 to 1987, she was appointed by President Ronald Reagan as a commissioner of the Marine Mammal Commission. Ms. Pryor founded Sunshine Books, later named Karen Pryor Clicker Training. The company produces books and videos on behavior and training, national educational conferences for professionals and the general public, and international courses for instructors and students. In 1992, she was a publishing and video producer. Ms. Pryor was a guest faculty member at Brown University in 1996 and Ohio State University and the University of Kansas in 1999.

Ms. Pryor has contributed as an author to her field. She has published "Nursing Your Baby" in 1963, a revised edition in 1973, "Lads Before the Wind: Adventures in Porpoise Training" in 1975, "Don't Shoot the Dog! The New Art of Teaching and Training" in 1984, "How to Teach Your Dog to Play Frisbee" in 1985, and "Dolphin Societies: Discoveries and Puzzles" in 1991. Reprinted in 1999, the revised edition of "Don't Shoot the Dog! The New Art of Teaching and Training" received the Excellence in Media award from the American Psychological Association in 1984. Furthermore, Ms. Pryor was the editor of "Crunch and Des: Classic Stories of Salt Water Fishing" and "Nursing Your Baby" in 1991 and "Karen Pryor on Behavior" in 1995. She also has contributed articles to various professional journals, and is the author of the books "Reaching the Animal Mind" in 2009 and "On My Mind: Reflections on Animal Behavior and Learning."

As an esteemed marine biologist and writer, Ms. Pryor is a member of various scientific organizations, including International Marine Animal Trainers Association, Association for Behavior Analysis, Animal Behavior Society, Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Authors' Guild, Marine Mammal Society, Society of Women Geographers, and Cosmopolitan Club. Ms. Pryor has been featured in various Marquis Who's Who publications, including the 1st edition of Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare. She also has appeared in the 16th and 17th editions of Who's Who of American Women and the 21st and 25th editions of Who's Who in the West.
