Dr. Barabash has been working in clinical psychology since the 1960s. Since then, she has held a wide range of positions with the New York City Board of Education, including as a school psychologist, clinical supervisor, regional coordinator, assistant superintendent for clinical services and deputy assistant superintendent. She has maintained a private practice for more than 20 years, and has offered her services as a forensic consultant since 1999.
Dr. Barabash was initially drawn to the field of psychology because she was challenged in learning to understand people and developing skills to help. She saw it as a puzzle put together differently for people with problems. This led her to major in psychology at Brooklyn College, where she earned a BA, magna cum laude, and ultimately to an MS in clinical psychology from the City University of New York and a PhD in school psychology from New York University. She taught in New York and worked as a school psychologist and clinical supervisor until the early '90s. In response to federal laws regarding disability benefits, Dr. Barabash saw many parents who were unable to access those services without assistance. She returned to academia to earn a JD from Brooklyn Law School, and was able to assist families in getting the services students needed as an attorney. More importantly, she has helped to educate parents to become advocates for their children's needs on their own.
Shortly before launching her private practice in 1995, she was serving with the New York City Board of Education, now the Department of Education, as an assistant superintendent. From 2011 to 2013, she worked as executive director of Spring Valley School. Dr. Barabash was selected as the recipient of the 1991 Brian Tomlinson Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement in Psychology, along with several teaching awards. She maintains involvement with a wide range of professional organizations, including the New York City Association of School Psychologists, American Psychological Association, and Administrative Women in Education. She is admitted to practice in Alabama, New York, and New Jersey
In addition to maintaining private practices in psychology and law, Dr. Barabash has served as a forensic consultant since 2000. She is a diplomate with the American College of Forensic Examiners Institute, as well as a licensed psychologist in Alabama and New York. An established professional in her fields of focus, Dr. Barabash has provided presentations for the Down Syndrome Foundation, Autism Parents Network and American Association of Child Psychiatry. She has authored numerous works, including the "Mainstreaming Handbook" for the New York City Board of Education. Dr. Barabash also has children of her own, Gamble Nelkin and Tor Nelkin with her late husband, William W. Nelkin. She is the proud grandmother of Jasper William Nelkin, and enjoys travel, reading, and spending time with her family.
