Dr. Ko is an accomplished architectural engineer and construction manager in South Korea, and served for many years with the Korean Army since his commission in 1986. He has been honored with multiple civil awards in the service of his country, and is the author of numerous major papers documenting multinational consortium projects, strategy assessments for engineering and architectural programs, as well as the impact of water pressure for constructs at sea. Today, Dr. Ko works as a managing director of Dong-Il A&E and as a professor with Sejong University in Seoul.
Born in 1964, Dr. Ko graduated from the Korea Naval Academy in 1986, and was commissioned as an officer in the Republic of Korea Marine Corps. He led an infantry platoon in the First Marine Division for six months before becoming a company commander. From 1991 to 1993, he was appointed to the Second Marine Division, and in 1994, he attended the Army Engineer School. Dr. Ko received a Master of Architecture from Yonsei University in 1995.
From 1996 to 1999, Dr. Ko was appointed chief of operations in the First Marine Division Engineer Battalion. He attended the Navy War College in 2000, and served as a studies and analysis officer for the plans division of combined forces command from 2000 to 2004. His duties included land procurement and military logistics with the U.S. Forces in Korea. The post included a term of military education at the U.S. Marine Staff College in Quantico., Virginia.
Dr. Ko earned a PhD in architecture engineering from Yonsei University in 2009, and retired from field duty in 2010. He became a managing director at the civilian firm of Over Sea Projects until 2015 before offering his services as a construction management chief in defense projects from 2015 to 2016. Dr. Ko reflected on his achievements with the paper "Lessons Learned from Multinational Parties Involved in Program Management Consortiums in Korea" for the International Conference on Construction Engineering and Project Management, which was held in Busan, South Korea in 2015. Dr. Ko is a member of the Korea Construction Engineering and Management Association as well as the Korea Institute of Building Construction.
Dr. Ko is certified as a professional engineer by the Ministry of Transport & Construction in Korea as well as the Professional Construction Management organization. He has been decorated with the 2009 Minister of National Defense Citation, the 2013 Minister of Infrastructure and Transport Citation, the Vice Commander CFC Citation, and a 2005 U.S. Army Commandant Medal. Dr. Ko is married to Hong Eun-Sook, and they have one daughter, Ko Eun-Byul. He enjoys golf and ping-pong.
