Serving in a variety of academic capacities over the course of a few decades, Dr. Goldstein currently holds the title of professor emeritus at the Baylor College of Medicine, a position she has held since 2004. From 1989 to 2004, she was professor of medicine and professor of molecular and cellular biology. Prior to that, she served in medicine and cell biology as both an associate professor from 1979 to 1989 and assistant professor from 1977 to 1979. She was also an assistant professor of cell biophysics and medicine from 1973 to 1977.
Dr. Goldstein began her career at the college as an instructor of cell biophysics and medicine in 1970. Before her career at Baylor College, she served an assistant professor of biology at the University of Texas for eight years and instructor of biology at the University of Texas and MD Anderson Hospital. She began her career as a lab instructor of biology at Rice University in 1965.
Dr. Goldstein graduated from Rice University with a PhD in 1969 and a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, in 1965. Outside of the classroom, she applied her expertise in biology as a consultant for multiple organizations, including the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute in the National Institutes of Health from 1986 to 1994 and the National Research Council from 1996 to 2000. She was a member of the executive committee and Basic Sciences Council of the American Heart Association in Dallas from 1987 to 1994, and member of the Assembly Delegation from 1995 to 1998. She served the Microscopy Society of America as biological director from 1990 to 1992, chair of the International Committee from 1993 to 1995, and president from 1995 to 1996. Finally, she served as a liaison officer to the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Consortium of Affiliated for International Programs.
Dr. Goldstein served as an active member of multiple organizations. She was vice president of the Association for Women in Science from 1979 to 1980 and president and member of the executive council of the Texas Society of Electron Microscopy. She is a Fellow of the Microscopy Society of America and served the society as the biological director and president. She was a visiting fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge University from 2001 to 2002, and is now Life Member of Clare Hall. In addition, she is still active as a member of the American Society of Cell Biology, Biophysical Society, and AAAS.
Dr. Goldstein's civic engagements include her involvements as vice president and member of the board of directors of the Texas Chamber Orchestra from 1982 to 1986. She was a member of the board of directors of River Oaks Women's Breakfast Club, the Houston Friends of Music, and the Rice University Shepherd Society Governing Council. She was also a member of the award committee of the Young Women's Christian Association's Outstanding Houston Women and advisory board member of the Houston Grand Opera.
Dr. Goldstein was commended with the Outstanding Houston Women in Science and Technology Award by the Young Women's Christian Association in 1990, the Order of Silver Thistle by the Scottish Heritage Foundation in 1990, the NASA Achievement Award for Cosmos in 2004 and 1991 and for Cosmos 2G in 1994. She also won the Women on the Move Award in 2002. Dr. Goldstein was awarded as a grantee of the National Institutes of Health from 1974 to 1998. She has been featured in Who's Who of American Women and numerous editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Goldstein originally set her sights on the opera and sang in the chorus of the Houston Grand Opera. However, with a natural talent and interest for math and science, she changed her major to biology while in college. She met her future husband, Alexander Goldstein, Jr., a Harvard grad in his second year of medical school. He supported her efforts and successes in the study of biology. They have been married for 52 years and have one child, David Neil Black.
Dr. Goldstein also contributed her success to the loving support of her parents, Daniel Archibald and Sarah Elizabeth McNeill, both of whom are buried in the Arlington National Cemetery. Her mother, a talented musician, and father, an involved and caring parent, promoted exploration, free expression, and keeping an open mind by always exposing her to new and changing perspectives. She was also inspired by her voice teacher who introduced her to a level of sophistication and cultural urbanity. Dr. Goldstein's passion and dedication for her career is grounded on the belief that one should "stick to the core of who you are and what you want to do" and "make the world a more beautiful place wherever you go." Her expertise in her field, breadth of knowledge, and joyful exuberance has served as an inspiration for others and has established her as a reputable member of her community.
