Married to Fern Gelford since 1965 with two children, he has been named in close to 60 editions of Who's Who, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World. He was also pictured and quoted in the New York Times in March, 2012. This article spoke about the Harvard University varsity basketball team on which Mr. Lowenfels played in 1956. Turning down an invitation to play in that year's New Orleans Holiday Festival Tournament because the hosts insisted on separate facilities for the African-American player on the Harvard team, he and his teammates believed that it was necessary to speak out and act against racial prejudice.
