He graduated from Indiana University with a PhD in 1973 and a Master of Arts in 1971. He also holds a Bachelor Degree from Drew University. Dr. Freeman currently serves as a professor at Hunter College at the City University of New York, a position he has held for 25 years.

Previously, Dr. Freeman served Hunter College as chairman of the department of philosophy from 1992 to 1998, as an associate professor from 1985 to 1992, and as an assistant professor of philosophy from 1978 to 1984. Prior to his career at Hunter College, Dr. Freeman served as a research associate at University of Victoria for three years and as a lecturer at multiple institutions, including Bloomfield College in New Jersey, Butler University in Indianapolis, and Indiana University.

Dr. Freeman is the author of the text book "Thinking Logically: Basic Concepts for Reasoning," published in 1993, and the monographs "Argument Structure: Representation and Theory," published by Springer in 2011, "Acceptable Premises: An Epistemic Approach to an Informal Logic Problem" published in 2004 with Cambridge University Press, and "Dialectics and the Macrostructure of Arguments: A Theory of Argument Structure," published in 1991. He has published articles in multiple journals, with many works featured in the journals Informal Logic and Argumentation.

Dr. Freeman is a member of the American Philosophical Association, and the Association for Informal Logic and Critical Thinking. In 2010, he was honored as the keynote speaker at the International Society for the Study of Argumentation Conference and was awarded by the organization and the University of Amsterdam for his contributions to the field. In 2010, Dr. Freeman was also honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Association for the Study of Argumentation. He has been featured in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the East.
