Currently the Charles Edward Whitten professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School since 1994, Dr. Gragoudas has held the position of director of the retina service at Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary since 1985. Dr. Gragoudas is a well-respected surgeon and clinician whose clinical and research interests are specific to retinal diseases and macular degeneration. Known globally for his diagnosis and management of intraocular tumors, he pioneered the use of proton therapy in eye tumors, a treatment modality that has been proven to be extremely successful and has been used in many ocular oncology centers around the world.
Dr. Gragoudas completed his MD at Athens National and Kapodistrian University in Athens, Greece, in 1965, residency in ophthalmology at Boston University's Medical Center, and fellowship in vitreoretinal surgery at Massachusetts Eye and Ear. He taught as an instructor of ophthalmology and as an associate professor at Harvard Medical School for just under 20 years before becoming a full professor at the prestigious university.
Some of Dr. Gragoudas's other achievements in medicine, specifically ophthalmology, have included the use of photodynamic therapy for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration, or AMD, as well as work with a group of other ophthalmologists in demonstrating the critical role of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in ocular neovascularization before developing therapies targeting VEGF. In 2014, Dr. Gragoudas received the Champalimaud Vision Award alongside a few colleagues for their work on using anti-angiogenesis drug therapy for the treatment of age-related macular degeneration, an award that is considered a "Nobel Prize" in vision research.
Dr. Gragoudas has been the recipient of a number of other awards and recognitions, including an Academy Honor Award by the American Academy of Ophthalmology, a Retina Research Foundation Prize of the Jules Gonin Lectureship, and a Research to Prevent Blindness Senior Scientific Investigators Award. Dr. Gragoudas has contributed more than 250 articles to professional journals such as the American Journal of Ophthalmology, the Archives of Ophthalmology, and Ophthalmology and has authored more than 100 chapters, reviews, and books in his field.
An elected fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and member of the Association for Research and Vision in Ophthalmology, the Retina Society, the Macula Society, and the Gonin Club, Dr. Gragoudas married Lia Yiannoutsou in 1968, the same year he came to the United States from his home country of Greece. Together, they are the proud parents of two children.
