The son of Glen John and Florence Lydia Anderson, Dr. Anderson is an architect, planner, and educator who has contributed immensely to his field. Dr. Anderson was responsible for the design of the international recycling symbol in 1971. He also has contributed articles to various professional journals.
In 1970, Dr. Anderson obtained a Bachelor's degree in Architecture, magna cum laude, from the University of Southern California. He continued his studies at the same university, receiving a Master's degree in Urban Design in 1971. Dr. Anderson was certified as a registered architect in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and New York, as well as the Washington, D.C. area. After graduation, Dr. Anderson traveled to Stockholm, Sweden, where he received a diplom in social sciences from Stockholm University in 1972.
Having returned to the United States, Dr. Anderson worked as a planner and designer for David Jay Flood and Associates until 1973 and then Gruen Associates until 1974. Prior to working for David Jay Flood and Associates, he also was a research consultant for Irvine Corporation. Dr. Anderson moved to Baltimore, MD, where he worked as an architect and planner for RTKL Associates between 1974 and 1976. In 1976, he became a senior planner for Prince George's County. He also was a senior planner for the University of Maryland Central Administration from 1976 to 1977.
Dr. Anderson then traveled to Saudi Arabia to be an assistant professor of architecture and planner at King Faisal University in Dammam from 1977 to 1985. During this period, he was a consultant for CH2M Hill International in 1978. In 1980, he was promoted to the head of the department or urban and regional planning at this same university. After returning to the United States, Dr. Anderson obtained a PhD in Geography and Environmental Engineering from the John Hopkins University in 1985. In the same year, he became a research fellow at the John Hopkins University.
From 1985 through 2004, Dr. Anderson was the vice president, senior architect, and chief planner of STV Inc. In this time, he served as an adjunct faculty in real state for John Hopkins University, as well as a guest lecturer at Clemson University. Dr. Anderson guest lectured at the Helsinki University Technology Center for Urban and Regional Studies in 2005. He became the director of planning at TEC Inc. in 2004 as well as the national director of master planning in 2006. From 2009 to 2012, Dr. Anderson has worked as the planning director and regional manager of GTCS, Inc. He is currently a contract planning consultant at the Defense Health Agency.
Since 1986, Dr. Anderson has been a member of the Mount Royal Improvement Association. He was the president of the Bolton Hill Association from 1988 to 1990. He also served as a member from 1991 to 1995, board member from 1992 to 1994, and chairman of the architectural review board from 1994 to 1995, respectively.
Dr. Anderson is also a member of various professional organizations, such as Engineering Society of Baltimore, Johns Hopkins University Alumni Association, Merritt Athletic Club, Neighborhood Design Center, Citizens Planning & Housing Association, National Council Architectural Registration Boards, American Planning Association, Urban Land Institute, American Institute of Certified Planners, and Lambda Alpha National Land Economic Honor Society. As a member of the National Association Industrial and Office Properties, Dr. Anderson was part of the Maryland Chapter Awards Committee and DC Chapter Awards Committee in 2006. He served on the executive committee of the Urban Land Institute Baltimore District Council from 1995 to 2006 and its chair program committee between 2001 and 2005. Dr. Anderson was a member of 1,000 Friends of Maryland, for which he was a board director, transportation and land use committee member, and financial committee member.
Dr. Anderson was an Aspen Design Conference fellow in 1969 and a Johns Hopkins University fellow in 1978. Dr. Anderson is a fellow of the Society of American Military Engineers. From 2002 to 2006, was on the Baltimore post-chair program committee, and from 2007 to 2012, on the board of directors. He was awarded the Max O. Urbahn Award in 2001 by the Society of American Military Engineers. Dr. Anderson is also a member of the American Institute of Architects for which he was an active member of the urban design committee from 1990 to 2013, European chapter from 2002 to 2010, international committee from 2004 to 2010, and national editorial subcommittee between 2004 and 2005.
Born on October 12, 1947, in Honolulu, HI, Dr. Anderson was awarded an American Institute of Architecture student prize in 1970, and received a Bogardus Social Research award from the University of Southern California in the same year. He also was named to the Fulbright Roster of Senior Specialists in 2002 and was awarded the Fulbright Senior Specialist Grant in 2004. Dr. Anderson has appeared in various Marquis Who's Who publications, including the seventh and eighth editions of Who's Who in American Education. He also has been featured in the 46th through 50th, 52nd, 57th, 58th, 69th, and 70th editions of Who's Who in America. His achievements have been recorded in the 22nd, 23rd, and 34th through 42nd editions of Who's Who in the East.
