Mr. French is a corporate and environmental lawyer, the current chair of Tudor Associates L.L.C. in New York City and a patron of the arts. He served as a practicing attorney in the New York metropolitan area for more than four decades, and has taught at numerous prestigious institutions.
Born in 1932 to John French Jr. and the former Rhoda Walker in Boston, MA, Mr. French attended Dartmouth College (BA 1955) (Class President and President of the Dartmouth Class Presidents Association) and a J.D. from Harvard Law School (member of winning team, Ames Moot Court competition) before joining the U.S. Air Force. From 1958 to 1961, he reached the rank of Captain with the Judge Advocate Generals Corp, US Air Defense Command. Through the '60s, he served as an associate with Milbank, Tweed, Hadley & McCloy, and thereafter, he joined the law firm of Satterlee & Stephens in New York City. From 1973 to 1981, he worked as assistant general counsel with Continental Group in Stamford, Connecticut, and went on to Peabody International Corporation as vice president, secretary, and general counsel in 1981. In 1982, Mr. French became a partner of Appleton, Rice & Perrin in NYC, and in 1985, he became a partner of Beveridge and Diamond PC in New York City, retiring as counsel from 1993 to 1999.
Mr. French became chair of Tudor Associates in 1999 after representing numerous clients and lecturing at the Practicing Law Institute, the Association of the Bar of the City of New York (Chair, Committee on Environmental Law), the New York State Bar Association (Founding Member, Committee on Environmental Law), the American Law Institute, as well as the Dartmouth Alumni College. His legal accomplishments were recognized by the New York State Bar with an award for pioneering contributions to the formation of environmental law in the U.S.
Mr. French has served as a director for the New York Philharmonic Society, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Salzburg Festival Society, the official American managing entity for the Austrian city's annual celebration of opera, drama, and concerts. Mr. French's artistic patronage was honored with a 2017 Lifetime Achievement Award from Young Concert Artists in NYC, as well as a 2017 Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. He also received the Dartmouth Alumni Award in 1988, the Appalachian Mountain Club Distinguished Service Award in 1985 and the Westchester County Distinguished Service Award in 1980.
In the civic sphere, Mr. French has been involved with numerous local institutions, notably as a Founding Trustee of the Hudson River Foundation for Science and Research and a Trustee or Director of the YMCA-YWCA Camping Services of Greater New York, the Third St. Music School Settlement House, International House, the Metropolitan Opera Club, the 33 East 70th Street Corporation, the Teatro alla Scala Foundation, the Westchester County Planning Board, the Bedford, NY, Republican Town Committee and the New York State Environmental Board. Additionally, Mr. French belongs to the American Bar Association, the Sharon Country Club, the Holland Masonic Lodge Number 8, the American Society of Corporate Secretaries, the Environmental Law Institute, the New York State Bar Association, the Mayflower Descendants, the Metropolitan Opera Society, the Century Association, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Pilgrims, the Knickerbocker Club, the Harvard Club of NYC, and the River Club of NYC.
For contributions to environmental law and New York's vibrant cultural circles, Mr. French was selected for inclusion in numerous volumes of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World. In 1957, he married Leslie Ten Eyck, and had two sons, John B. and Lawrence C. In 1965, he married Anne Hubbell, and had two children, Daniel J. and Susanna H. In 2011 he married Carole Parsons Bailey. Mr. French has five grandchildren.
