Drawing upon more than 30 years of professional experience, Ms. Higgins currently serves as a clinical social worker with Exempla Hospice Care, now the Sisters of Charity of Levenworth Hospice Care. In addition to holding advanced certification in hospice and palliative care, she is also a national board certified diplomate in clinical social work through the National Association of Social Workers. Throughout the course of her career, Ms. Higgins has been featured in a wide range of honors publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the West and Who's Who of American Women. She was one of six women chosen as a finalist for the Alterian Bryant Award: Celebrating the Diversity of Womankind, recognized for her accomplishments in the field of education, integrity, character, and effecting community change and self sacrifice.
Prior to pursuing a career in social work, Ms. Higgins served as a teacher with various schools throughout Colorado. Upon receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Northwestern College in 1966, she joined Adams County District 12, where she served as a teacher for two years. Ms. Higgins briefly relocated to the Philippines, where she filled the role of teacher with the department of defense with Clark AFB between 1969 and 1970. After leaving this position, she returned to the United States to serve as a teacher with Jefferson County Schools for five years.
Ms. Higgins began a career as a social worker when she joined the Boulder County Medical Health Center in 1977. During this time, she completed a Master of Arts through the University of Colorado, which she received in 1978. Ms. Higgins served as a social worker with the Boulder Community Counseling Center from 1979 to 1981. She became a Licensed Clinical Social Worker through the University of Denver in 1983. Ms. Higgins was previously employed by Adams County School District 12 as a school social worker for 20 years. She recently celebrated 11 years as a clinical social worker with the Sisters of Charity. She is a former part-time social worker with the Hospice of Metro Denver, Boulder Valley Public Schools and Lutheran Hospice Care in Wheat Ridge. In addition, she previously served as a counselor trainer for Up With People (Worldsmart) between 1998 and 2000.
Ms. Higgins was a member of the board of directors with the Health and Human Services for the City and County of Broomfield. She is recognized as the author and editor of "Nothing Could Stop the Rain," a collection of student poetry published in 1976.
