Officially retiring in 2010, Dr. Thornton is a professor emeritus of history at the University of Michigan who spent 39 years in the classroom and enjoyed a wonderful career teaching the future leaders of tomorrow. After obtaining a Bachelor's degree with high honors from Princeton University in 1966, he went on to graduate school at Yale University, where he received a PhD in 1974. That same year, he accepted an offer to begin teaching at UM. Beginning as an assistant professor and working his way up to a full-professor in just eight years, Dr. Thornton's strong interest in history steered him to become a widely recognized expert in the history of the American south.
In addition to his teachings at UM, Dr. Thornton was a Pitt Professor of American History at Cambridge University in England, a position he held from 2007 to 2008, as well as a former fellow of Woodrow Wilson International Center of Scholars in Washington from 1994 to 1995. He authored three history books, including "Politics and Power in a Slave Society: Alabama, 1800-1860," which was the recipient of a 1978 John H. Dunning Prize by the American Historical Association. "Dividing Lines: Municipal Politics and the Struggle for Civil Rights in Montgomery, Birmingham and Selma" received a 2003 Liberty Legacy Foundation Prize by The Organization of American Historians. His collection of essays, " Archipelagoes of My South: Episodes in the Shaping of a Region, 1830-1965" appeared in 2016.
A Guggenheim Foundation fellow from 1978 to 1979 and a Danforth Foundation fellow from 1966 to 1974, Dr. Thornton has been included in Who's Who in America five times in the past seven years. He is also a longstanding member of The Organization of American Historians and the American Historical Association. He has been married to his wife, Brenda Booth, since January 1985.
