Mohamed Kanu Recognized By Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Public Health

Dr. Kanu is an internationally renowned expert on public health and a boon to communities for the management of sickness and the aftermath of disease



    NASHVILLE, TN, November 02, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mohamed Kanu has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Since 2009, Dr. Kanu has served as a director of the Master of Public Health program as well as professor with the department of public health, health administration and health sciences at Tennessee State University. He most recently entered the international spotlight in 2016 as a key consultant with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Sierra Leone, where he helped organize the country's response in the aftermath of the Ebola outbreak. Dr. Kanu has worked with Sierra Leone since 1995, and has since dedicated 22 years to the multidisciplinary effort of public health involving public health science, applied medical anthropology, and a firm grasp of modern history.

Dr. Kanu studied modern history as an undergraduate at Fourah Bay College at the University of Sierra Leone. He was working in administration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Sierra Leone government, and was exposed to the traumatic events of the civil war that was going on at the time. To help the country recover, Dr. Kanu went on to study applied medical anthropology at the University of Memphis, earning a Master of Arts in 1999.

Dr. Kanu served as a graduate assistant while matriculating for an M.P.H. from Saint Louis University, and earned a Ph.D. in the field in 2004. Dr. Kanu immediately found an application for his work as project manager for an HIV and STD evaluation study with the alcohol and drug prevention research center at the University of Memphis. He went on to serve the state of Tennessee on a commission on aging and disability, and from 2005 to 2010, he consulted with the National Minority AIDS Education and Training Center in Nashville.

From 2008 to 2010, Dr. Kanu worked with Daniel Payne Outreach Ministries as a consultant on alcoholism screening, and has worked with Jackson State University as an evaluation consultant. In 2011, Dr. Kanu was recognized by Tennessee State as an associate professor, and in 2016 as a full professor.

As an authority in public health, Dr. Kanu has written a chapter on public health and peace building in post-war Sierra Leone for David J. Francis' book, "When War Ends, Building Peace in Divided Communities," as well as chapters for other books on infectious disease in America and on vulnerable populations. Dr. Kanu's presentations and papers are widely circulated, and he has attracted funding from health departments and universities. Much of his research funding is dedicated to students or parents in minority communities.

Dr. Kanu also supports the boards of the Nashville International Academy and the Center for Refugee Services, as well as the Nashville Arthritis Foundation. He is a member of the American Public Health Association, the National Society of Allied Health, the Society for Applied Anthropologists. He served as a reviewer for the Journal of Physical Activity and Health and the Journal of Public Health Management and Practice. He is a prolific civil volunteer, and offers his time on numerous committees for Tennessee State.

In recognition of his services in public health, Dr. Kanu has received a 2006 Award from Utica College and FAMU for infusing cross cultural aging education into the Allied Health curriculum, a 2008 Most Outstanding Fellow Award in the 2007 Emerging Leaders in Public Health Fellowship from the North Carolina Institute for Public Health at the University of North Carolina, as well as a 2008 Most Distinguished Research Award from Tennessee State University. Dr. Kanu currently works with a team in the World Bank to evaluate economic assistance and development for areas affected by the blood diamond trade, which includes Sierra Leone.
