Dr. Ahmed has worked with Synopsys Inc. since he earned a doctorate in electrical and computer engineering, and is a leader in electronic design integration and chip design. He trained with IBM and Intel, particularly in neural networks and algorithms, and is interested in the application of artificial intelligence to sophisticated computing, including neuromorphic computing and large scale simulation of spiking neural networks. Dr. Ahmed is the recipient of a 2010 Outstanding Achievement Award in Graduate Studies, Computer Engineering, from Syracuse University, and scored in the 91st percentile in the 2005 National IT Aptitude Test.
Originally from India, Dr. Ahmed earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication from the R.N.S. Institute of Technology in Bangalore. He traveled to Syracuse University in New York to complete an MS in Computer Engineering, followed by a PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering. After his Bachelor's Degree, he worked on hardware with iWave Systems and as a graduate student he researched spiking neural networks at Syracuse University. While studying for a doctorate, Dr. Ahmed was able to work with IBM in research collaboration on the TrueNorth neurosynaptic processor, and interned with Intel on the Brain-State-in-a-Box and the Xeon Phi coprocessor. He joined Synopsys in 2017.
Dr. Ahmed has worked on a myriad of projects, from spike-based long short-term memory on a neurosynaptic processor to more complex projects like intelligent extraction of illegible text from photographed documents. In addition to his outstanding achievement, he was presented with a Best Out-Going Meritorious Student of Electronics and Communication Engineering Award in 2006 from his alma mater in Bangalore, and won a number of collegiate contests. Dr. Ahmed was the president of the Group of VLSI Enthusiasts, or GROVE, while at Syracuse University. He also volunteers with the Aashayein Foundation empowering underprivileged children to go to school.
