Gerald Lazarus, MD, Presented with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award by Marquis Who's Who

Dr. Lazarus has been endorsed by Marquis Who's Who as a leader in the fields of healthcare and higher education

DURHAM, NC, November 03, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Gerald Lazarus, MD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Lazarus has over 50 years of experience in academic medicine, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Professor of dermatology and medicine at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, former director and founder of The Johns Hopkins Wound Center, and former chief of dermatology at Johns Hopkins Bayview, Dr. Lazarus received his medical degree from George Washington University School of Medicine before completing his residency in internal medicine at the University of Michigan, residency in dermatology at Massachusetts General Hospital and a visiting fellowship for two years at Clare Hall at the University of Cambridge. Prior to his recruitment with Johns Hopkins, he served as chairman of dermatology at Duke University (Callaway Professor) and the University of Pennsylvania (Hartzell Professor). He also served as chief executive officer and dean of the medical school at the University of California Davis Medical School and Health System.

At Hopkins he has been instrumental in the development of collaborations with Walter Reed, the National Naval Medical Center, and the Center for Biofilm Research at the University of Montana. Over the course of his extensive career, he has also taught at Albert Einstein Medical College and, during a three-year stay in Beijing, served as an advisor to the Minister of Health of China while also serving as a senior professor at Peking Union Medical College.

Known for having developed medical and scientific partnerships between American and Chinese universities since that time, Dr. Lazarus has contributed more than 300 scholarly articles to medical journals. Furthermore, he is a former associate editor of the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, and has authored/co-authored seven books in his field, including "Diagnosis of Skin Disease" in 1980 with L. Goldsmith.

Strongly believing that the medical field of today is driven by the use of technology and financial reimbursement, as opposed to focusing on compassionate patient care, Dr. Lazarus as a trustee of the National Trust for the Humanities in collaboration with the Association of American Medical Colleges has strived to make the humanities a pillar of medical education. This philosophy has driven him throughout the course of his career to practice and teach that caring for patients is the joy and magic of medicine." Dr. Lazarus also noted that his decision to get into dermatology was the result of an ALS-lookalike disease that hindered his ability to fully use his left shoulder. It has been through perseverance and determination that he has been able to do such good work for such a long time in the field of medicine.

Dr. Lazarus served as the founding president of the Milstein Medical Asian American Partnership Foundation, and serves on the board for both the Milstein Medical Asian American Partnership and the American Skin Association. He has served as trustee of The George Washington University for nine years. He is also a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American Society of Clinical Investigation, and the Association of American Physicians. Furthermore, Dr. Lazarus remained affiliated with the American Academy of Dermatology and the Biochemistry Society, and has been both former president and director of the Society of Investigative Dermatology as well as fellow of the American Dermatological Association.

The recipient of a 1986 John Simon Guggenheim fellowship, granted by the University of Geneva, a 1986 Sultzberger Award by the American Academy of Dermatology, a 1996 Distinguished Alumnus Award by George Washington University, and a grantee recipient by the National Institutes of Health, Dr. Lazarus was also recently selected to receive the David Martin Carter Mentor Award by the American Skin Association in 2014. He has been named to dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in the East, and Who's Who in the World.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Gerald Lazarus, MD, has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
