Dr. Battilega is a notable research and development company executive within his field. In 1963, Dr. Battilega obtained a BS from Gonzaga University. While studying at this institution, Dr. Battilega worked as a research assistant for Tektronix from 1961 to 1962. He later was a research assistant for the Sandia National Laboratory in 1965. Dr. Battilega continued his studies at Oregon State University, where he earned a PhD in 1973.
Dr. Battilega served as a major of the US Army from 1963 through 1971. He was honored with the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Bronze Star, and Meritorious Service Medal. Following his service, Dr. Battilega was a staff engineer at Martin Marietta Corporation from 1971 to 1973. He became the vice president, general manager, and research director of Science Applications International Corporation between 1973 and 1999. From 1999 to 2004, Dr. Battilega has worked as the president of his own company, John Battilega Associates.
Dr. Battilega has made contributions on both a local and national level. From 1972 to 1974, he was a coach of a youth baseball team, as well as the president of a parish council of St. Jude Catholic Church. He coached a youth baseball team again between 1975 and 1998. Simultaneously, Dr. Battilega was a member of the select committee on computer technology for the National Defense University in 1983, as well as a member of the AirLand Battle Future Special Study Group of the U.S. Army in 1988.
Since 1978, Dr. Battilega has been a lecturer at various defense and intelligence colleges. He has led over 200 seminars on defense planning topics. Dr. Battilega is also a member and senior consultant of several advisor panels for the US government. In 1985, he was a member of the US Strategic Defense Initiative against the Soviet Union. During this time, Dr. Battilega also was the director of Foreign Systems Research Center and Science Applications International Corporation. From 1982 to 1984, he was a member of the US Defense of Science Board.
In 1980, Dr. Battilega became an adjunct professor of the US Defense Intelligence College. Later in 1986, Dr. Battilega served as the director of strategic research on defense policy and planning and international issue for the US government national security organizations. From 2000 to 2002, Dr. Battilega worked as an adjunct professor and senior lecturer for grad students at the University of Denver. From 2004 to 2017 he has worked as a senior technical director for Science Applications International Corporation and the Leidos Corporation.
The contributions of Dr. Battilega to his field extend to his role as an author. In 1984, he published his book, "The Military Applications of Modeling." He also has contributed various articles, chapters, and research monographs to professional publications. Dr. Battilega has been a member of many esteemed organizations, including the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Denver Council of Foreign Relations, Institute for Operations Research and Management Science, and International Institute of Strategic Studies. He also is a current member and former board director of U.S. Military Operations Research Society.
Dr. Battilega has appeared in various Marquis Who's Who publications, including the 34th and 37th editions of Who's Who in Finance and Business. He has been featured in the 57th through 70th editions of Who's Who in America, as well as the 21st and 27th through 33rd editions of Who's Who in the World.
The son of Ercole Anthony and Odelia Frances Battilega, Dr. Battilega was born on November 25, 1941 in Portland, Oregon. On May 2, 1964, he married Nancy Ann Scott. Together, the couple raised four children: Catherine, Edward, Michael, and David.
