A professor emeritus of pediatrics and former dean at the F. Edward School of Medicine at Uniformed Services University, Dr. Hemming led an interesting career in medicine, beginning his professional pursuits as a staff pediatrician at the U.S. Air Force Hospital in Wiesbaden, Germany, between 1970 and 1974. A commissioned 2nd lieutenant who advanced to colonel, he was a pediatric intern at the University of Utah Affiliated Hospitals who then completed his residency in pediatrics at Wilford Hall at the U.S. Air Force Medical Center in Lackland Air Force Base in Texas from 1968 to 1970.
Retiring in 2002 after spending 22 years at Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD, Dr. Hemming was a very influential professor and administrator at the university, whose mission is to educate, train, and comprehensively prepare uniformed services health professionals, scientists, and leaders to support the military and public health systems, the national security, and national defense strategies of the U.S. as well as the readiness of the country's uniformed services.
Originally an associate professor who turned full professor in 1984, he also served as chairman of the department for eight years, interim dean and dean for another seven years. Prior to entering academia, Dr. Hemming was chairman and director of the pediatric residency training at David Grant U.S. Air Force Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base in California from 1976 to 1980.
Throughout Dr. Hemming's 40-year career in medicine, he conducted research and published numerous articles to professional journals and clinical research studies that examined pathogenesis of bacterial and viral pulmonary infections in infants and young children. His research with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) resulted in two FDA licensed biologicals for the prevention of serious RSV, Respigam and Synagis. Since retirement, he has developed a rodent model of pulmonary tuberculosis sourced from a North American cotton rat to examine the natural history and pathogenesis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infections.
A practicing physician for more than 30 years for military families, Dr. Hemming also did consultant work in pediatrics for the Air Force Surgeon General from 1983 to 1990 and for the assistant secretary for health affairs for the Department of Defense from 1988 to 1991. He also served on the advisory council for the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.
A longtime member of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Pediatric Society, the Infectious Disease Society of America, the Western Society for Pediatric Research, and the Pediatric Infectious Disease Society, Dr. Hemming completed a Bachelor of Arts in Entomology at the University of Utah and an MD at the University of Utah College of Medicine. Furthermore, he is a diplomate of the American Board of Pediatrics. He is married to Alice Bell Hemming, with whom he has had four children.
