A former high school teacher and a celebrated women's field hockey coach, Dr. Davidson is perhaps best known for building the University of Iowa field hockey program into national prominence. Her women's field hockey team, the Hawkeyes, won the NCAA Field Hockey Division 1 Championship in 1986, and was the runner up in 1984. Dr. Davidson was voted 1983, 1984, and 1987 Big Ten Conference Field Hockey Coach of the Year. Her teams won the Big Ten Conference Field Hockey Championship from 1980 to 1984, 1986, and in 1987, producing seven Olympic athletes. "You win the first one and it can be a fluke," she said of her incredible success for the Daily Iowan, "Win the second one and you know it's not a fluke. By the third one, you're established." In 2005, Dr. Davidson became the first woman coach inducted into the University of Iowa Athletic Hall of Fame.
After ten years of coaching and teaching success at Iowa, in 1988 Dr. Davidson became the first woman in the country to be named Director of Intercollegiate Athletics of an NCAA Division 1 athletics program. At Central Connecticut State University she oversaw all sports, including football and men's basketball, thereby breaking barriers for women in intercollegiate athletics. Dr. Davidson served as director of intercollegiate athletics at both Central Connecticut State University and Sacramento State University from 1988 to 2000.
Dr. Davidson is an alumna of the University of New Hampshire, 1966, taught for the North Rockland Board of Education in Haverstraw, New York, and later with the Newton Board of Education in Massachusetts. After earning a MEd at Boston University in 1974, she became a teaching associate at the University of Massachusetts. She began work on a PhD degree there in 1976, and was named head field hockey coach of the university the same year. In 1983 she earned her PhD, and later received a 1995 Sport Management Program Distinguished Alumnus Award from the University of Massachusetts.
Dr. Davidson served for eight years as president of the U.S. Field Hockey Association, from 1984 to 1992. She represented U.S. women's field hockey throughout the world, and served in various roles for the U.S. Olympic Committee, the International Hockey Federation, and the Pan American Hockey Federation. Dr. Davidson was the co-editor of "Sports on Film and Video" in 1993, and has authored and published many articles in scholarly journals as well as numerous public speaking presentations. Active in her community, Dr. Davidson served on the board of directors for the New Britain Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program, the Tierra Del Oro Girl Scouts of America, and the California Musical Theater Foundation.
Dr. Davidson has been named to Who's Who in the Midwest twice, as well as Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of Emerging Leaders in America, and was profiled in "Celebrating Women Coaches, A Biographical Dictionary", in 2000. She has been the recipient of numerous awards throughout her career, including a 1993 New Agenda Award by the Women's Hall of Fame and a 1993 Women in Leadership Award by the New Britain, Connecticut Young Women's Christian Association. Dr. Davidson is currently working as a wealth management advisor at Merrill Lynch.
