Dr. Stapelfeldt has amassed more than 30 years of professional experience, and excelled in various roles with the Cleveland Clinic prior to his current role. Notably, he served as chairman of the department of general anesthesiology and vice chairman of information systems and technologies. Driven by his passion for anesthesiology, he regularly contributes to prominent industry publications, including the Journal of Physiology, the Mayo Clinic Proceedings, and Anesthesia & Analgesia. In addition, Dr. Stapelfeldt has been an integral member of the Mayo Clinic, where he has been chairman of transplantation anesthesiology and vice chairman of education for the department of anesthesiology in Jacksonville, as well as assistant professor of anesthesiology and physiology.
Dr. Stapelfeldt earned a MD from the University of Ulm School of Medicine in Germany in 1983 and completed a physiology fellowship and anesthesiology residency at the Mayo School of Graduate Medical Education in Rochester, Minnesota. Today, he holds medical licenses in the states of Missouri, Ohio, Florida and Minnesota. Recognized as a leader in his field, Dr. Stapelfeldt is a board-certified member of the American Association of Anesthesiologists, the International Anesthesia Research Society and the Health Information Management Systems Society. He is a founder and the original chief medical officer of Talis Clinical, LLC, an information management spinoff of Cleveland Clinic that has offered software solutions to physicians in high stress, high acuity care environments. He also owns several patents in clinical decision support technologies, and is the creator of the SLUScore perioperative risk scoring concept. Dr. Stapelfeldt is also noted for his work in liver transplant anesthesia with the Mayo Clinics in Florida and Arizona, as well as the assistance he lent to startup of transplantation in Costa Rica.
Dr. Stapelfeldt has been recognized with a 'Top Ten in Medicine' Innovations Award from the Cleveland Clinic, a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Merit Review Award, a Young Investigator Award from the Foundation for Anesthesia Education and Research (FAER) and Roche Laboratories, as well as Resident of the Year and Edward C. Kendall Awards from the Mayo Clinic. Looking ahead to the next phase of his career, Dr. Stapelfeldt intends to continue working in the field of anesthesiology, particularly in the development of electronic systems and algorithms designed to advance the postoperative outcome of surgical patients and reduce postoperative morbidity and mortality.
