An endocrinologist and professor in the department of diabetes, endocrinology, and metabolism at the International University of Health and Welfare Hospital since 2015, Dr. Awata has been teaching medicine for more than 20 years. He most recently taught at Saitama Medical School as a professor and director in the department of endocrinology and diabetes, as well as various other teaching capacities at the school between 1995 and 2014. He also taught as an instructor at Jichi Medical School in the division of endocrinology and metabolism.
Licensed MD by the Ministry Welfare Japan in 1981, Dr. Awata completed a PhD in Medicine at the University of Tokyo. He was a member of the medical staff in the faculty of medicine for the third department of medicine at the University of Tokyo between 1983 and 1984. He was also a senior resident in the division of endocrinology and metabolism at Jichi Medical School during 1983.
By 1993, Dr. Awata had become a postdoctoral fellow in the department of pathology at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in the United States. Two years later, he returned to Japan to begin his career in academia.
Dr. Awata has written extensively, publishing more than 115 articles in various professional journals, including in Diabetes, Diabetologia, Endocrinology, and the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. He is an active member of various professional organizations, including The Japanese Society of Internal Medicine, the Japan Diabetes Society, the Japan Society of Experimental Diabetes and Obesity, the American Diabetes Association, and the European Foundation for the Study of Diabetes.
The recipient of a 2017 Society Award, also known as the Komeda Award, granted by the Japan Society of Experimental Diabetes and Obesity, as well as a 1998 Encouragement Award by the Japanese Society of Internal Medicine, Dr. Awata has been highlighted in Who's Who in Science and Engineering in 2016 and Who's Who in the World every year since 2013. Married with three children, Dr. Awata enjoys playing golf and watching sports.
