Dr. Sohn has established herself as a reputable member of her field for her expertise in contemporary art, visual culture, literary theory, and semiotics. She graduated from the University of Paris VIII with a PhD in Theory of Contemporary Art and Visual Semiotics in 2006, a Diploma of Profound Studies in Arts of Image and Contemporary Art in 2001, and a Master of Arts in Theory of Plastic Arts and Contemporary Art in 1999. She also received a Master of Arts in Plastic Arts and Photography from Hongik University in Seoul, Republic of Korea in 1996 and a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Education from Seoul National University in 1994.
Dr. Sohn currently served as a professor at Kyungil University, a position she has held since 2010. Previously, she served as the chief curator at the Soul Museum of Art from 2009 to 2010. She was a postdoctoral researcher at Songsil University from 2006 to 2007 and in 2009. She also served numerous institutions as an instructor, including Sookmyung Women's University in 2009, Chungang University in 2008 and 2006, Hongik University from 2003 to 2006, and Busan University from 2003 to 2006. In addition, Dr. Sohn was a curator for the Photography Forum from 2008 to 2009.
In 2014, Dr. Sohn served as the artistic director of the "Korean Media Art after Namjune Paik," at the Fortabat Museum in Buenos Aires. She served as the curator for multiple exhibitions, including "How the City Works" at The 4th Daegu International Photography Biennale at the Daegu Art Factor in South Korea in 2012, "The Detour of the Real," at the Seoul Museum of Art's 2nd Photo Festival in 2011, the "Invitation to the Wondrous House" at the Seoul Museum of Art in 2010, the "Light Wall" at the Seoul Museum of Art in 2009, and as the chief curator of "Humanscape," at the 2nd Seoul International Photography Festival at the Seoul Culture Station in 2008.
Dr. Sohn has multiple works published in academic journals. She is the author of "Simultaneous Echoes," published in the Leonardo Journal by MIT Press in 2016, the "Study on Interval of Image: between Still and Moving Image," published in the Journal of Korean Basic Design and Art in 2012, "The Real in Contemporary Photography" published in the Journal of Art and Media in 2012, "Meta History of Photography," published in the Journal of Korean Basic Design and Art in 2011, "Video Art and Media Environment in City Space," published in the Journal of Korean Contents Association, in 2010, the "Study on Transformation of the Function of Mirror in Contemporary Video Art," in the Journal of Contemporary Art History in 2010, "Discussion on blurred image," published in the Journal of Society of Modern Photography and Video in 2010, the "Study on Visual Literacy and Artistic Practice," published in the Journal of Korean Basic Design and Art in 2008, and finally, the "Discussion on Post-Human accelerated by Digital Media," published in the Journal of Korean Basic Design and Art in 2007.
Dr. Sohn is a member of the Korean Basic Design and Art Society, a jury member of the Leonardo Journal and the Collection of National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul, and a judge in the ASSIAF contest. She has received numerous awards and commendations for her contributions to her industry. She was honored with the New Young Researcher Fund by the Korean Research Foundation from 2014 to 2017, and was supported by the Korean Culture and Art Committee in the International Exchange Exhibition Project in 2014.
