A physician, psychiatrist, child and adolescent psychiatrist, educator, and researcher for more than 50 years, Dr. Shrier was a full-time academic for 16 years (1978-1992) at University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-New Jersey Medical School, Newark, NJ in the Department of Psychiatry and the Community Mental Health Center; and from 1992-1994 at D.C. Children's National Medical Center in the Department of Psychiatry/Child Psychiatry with an academic appointment through George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, D,C.
Prior to 1978 and subsequent to 1994 she maintained academic affiliations on a part time basis, which enabled her to continue to teach, do research and publish in peer-reviewed publications. These affiliations included: Albert Einstein Medical School, Bronx, NY (1970-1973); and, in Washington D.C., The George Washington University Medical School (1994-present); Children's National Medical Center (1994-2010) and Walter Reed Army Medical Center (1994-2012). Since completing her training in 1970, Dr. Shrier has maintained a part time clinical psychiatric practice treating children, adolescents, and adults in New Jersey from 1970-1992 and in Washington, D.C. from 1994-present. She currently continues to serve as Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and of Pediatrics at George Washington University Medical Center.
A diplomat of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in Psychiatry in 1970 and in Child Psychiatry in 1977, Dr. Shrier was also a candidate at the New York Medical College Psychoanalytic Division in New York City (1973-78) where she completed her psychoanalysis and was a Visitor at Anna Freud's Hampstead Child Guidance Clinic in England (1965-1966).
Dr. Shrier earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry/Biology, magna cum laude, from Queens College of the City of New York in 1961, after 3 years of study at Queens and completion of her first year of Medical School at Washington University in St. Louis, MO. She then transferred to Yale University School of Medicine to join her husband Adam Louis Shrier who was in Yale's School of Engineering working towards his Doctorate. She received her MD from Yale in 1964.
From 1973-1976, Dr. Shrier worked as a staff psychiatrist for the Family Service and Child Guidance Center of the Oranges, Maplewood, Milburn, and Orange, New Jersey where she was a consultant to an inner city day care center and established and taught play therapy for individual preschoolers with behavioral issues. She subsequently served as the chief of outpatient child psychiatry at the UMDNJ-CMHC in Newark, NJ from 1973-1976 before becoming Director of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. During her tenure, she expanded the outpatient clinic and day school to include a therapeutic nursery, a teen mother and infant program with a staff of ten, a grant funded emergency service for children and adolescents, a multi-ethnic multi-racial outpatient program, a child psychiatry and child psychology training program, pediatric consultation and consultation to emergency services and mandatory clinical research for trainees and faculty and senior staff. Along with two colleagues, Dr. Shrier co-taught an innovative six week elective called Parenting and Professionalism: Combining Career and a Personal Life from 1980 to 1992 which has been replicated at other medical schools and described in several publications.
Dr. Shrier began doing largely unfunded research in her last year of medical school (as mandated by Yale Medical School) and has continued to be Investigator or Co-investigator in a series of cutting edge collaborative research projects since then, including: on Boy Victims of Child Sexual Abuse, Divorce and Sole versus Joint Custody, Gender Discrimination and Sexual Harassment, and Mother-Daughter Physicians. She has contributed chapters to books, numerous peer-reviewed journals and professional newsletter articles and edited a book. In 2015, Dr. Shrier established the Diane K. Shrier MD Fund for Research in Women's Health and Mental Health in the department of psychiatry at GWUMC to encourage junior faculty and psychiatry house-staff to engage in research and present and publish their findings.
She is a distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry. She is the recipient of several Exceptional Merit Awards by the UMDNJ-NJMS, as well as two Teaching Awards by the Children's National Medical Center. Dr. Shrier served on the Board of The Westchester Corporation where she and her husband reside and has continued to serve on numerous committees there from 1992 to the present.
Dr. Shrier has been cited in dozens of editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the East and Who's Who of American Women. Married to Adam Louis Shrier, D.Eng, J.D. since 1961, Dr. Shrier has four children and nine grandchildren.
