A licensed professional counselor, national certified counselor, certified yoga therapist, and former sex offender treatment provider in the state of Colorado, Ms. Romano has been the owner of New Beginnings Counseling, LLC, in Canon City, for the past four years. Her extensive background includes 27 years at the Colorado Department of Corrections, where she was first hired as a career development teacher in 1986. She was a valued member of the management team, and left the department as the regional mental health services administrator.
Ms. Romano holds a Bachelor of Arts from Walsh University, and two M.Ed. degrees from Bowling Green State University. She first entered the field as a developmental disability day program instructor in Canon City. In less than two years, she moved to a higher level position as a clinical behavior specialist at the Pueblo Regional Center in Pueblo, Colorado. After eighteen months, she transferred to the Colorado Department of Corrections, quickly moving into Clinical Services as a social worker and counselor. She was promoted to supervisory and management positions, including mental health coordinator, clinical team leader, and finally regional mental health services administrator. During this time, she also created a department-wide program for inmates with developmental disabilities and served as its coordinator. After retiring from state service, Ms. Romano spent two years as a military family life counselor providing professional services to armed services installations in Colorado Springs. She continues to provide counseling services in her private practice.
Notably, Ms. Romano served as co-chair for the committee to develop state standards for developmentally disabled sex offenders in Colorado, and has been a presenter on numerous topics in her field. She developed the mental health curriculum for the Colorado Department of Corrections Training Academy and implemented the Tom White "HELPER" model for suicide risk management in the department. She is a member of numerous professional groups, including the Fremont Economic Development Corporation, the American Counseling Association, the American Mental Health Counseling Association, the Association for Child and Adolescent Counseling, Postpartum Support International, and the American Association on Mental Retardation, where she served on the state board of directors from 1987 to 1991.
Ms. Romano is the proud mother of Nicholas Robert and Kaitlin Kristine with her husband of 31 years, Richard Ralph Romano. She is very involved at Shepherd of Hills Lutheran Church, where she was a council member from 2003 to 2007. She also served as a Sunday school teacher, a confirmation mentor, and an ambassador for the Rainbow Trail Lutheran Camp. Ms. Romano loves to read, walk, bicycle, and practice yoga. In 2013, Ms. Romano received the Value of Life Award Colorado from the Colorado Department of Corrections for her part in a successful suicide intervention. She has also been honored in numerous editions of Who's Who since 1997, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in the West, Who's Who in the World, and Who's Who of American Women.
