Dr. Ganesan currently serves as a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Oakland University, a position he has held for more than 30 years. Prior to joining Oakland University, he held positions at Western Michigan University, Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, Ruhr University in Germany, the IISc Bangalore and National Aeronautical Laboratory in India. Outside of his role as a professor, Dr. Ganesan also worked as a consultant at Texas Instruments, Compression Lab, HTC Inc., TACOM, ARM, and Chrysler. He is a member of multiple organizations, including the Society of Automotive Engineers, the American Society for Engineering Education, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
Dr. Ganesan graduated from the Indian Institute of Science with a PhD in 1980, a Master of Engineering, and a Bachelor of Engineering in 1971. He has received numerous awards and commendations for his contributions to his industry and influence in academia. He is the editor-in-chief of the "International Journal of Embedded System and Computer Engineering," and the "International Journal of Sensors and Applications." For the past 15 years, he has organized an annual embedded-system, one-day workshop at Oakland University, which was sponsored by the School of Engineering Computer Science and the Southeast Michigan Section of IEEE.
Dr. Ganesan has also acted as the chair of the IEEE Southeast Michigan Computer Chapter since 1996, as an IEEE Computer Society and Geographic Activities Board executive member since 2000, as a member of the IEEE Computer Society Reconfigurable Computing Committee since 2008, and as a Technical Committee Member of the IEEE Region 4 for 10 years. He has also been honored as an IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Speaker for six years. Dr. Ganesan has published more than 75 articles in professional journals, over 250 conference publications, two book chapters, and is the author/editor of nine books. He has obtained five patents over the last five years, and he was honored as the keynote speaker at IEEE Electro Information Technology Conferences and various conferences around the world.
In 2015, Dr. Ganesan was honored with the Hind Ratan Award, also known as the Jewel of India, from the NRIW Society, recognized by the government of India, in recognition of his academic achievements. He has also been honored with a plaque and certificate of appreciation for his 20 years of dedicated leadership and contributions to IEEE Southeast Michigan Section, and in 2016, he was honored with a certificate for his expert lectureship at the IEEE Southeast Michigan Section Workshop. IEEE Electro Information Technology also commended him with the Best Paper Award in 2001.
ISAM recently presented Dr. Ganesan with the Life Time Achievement Award in 2016, a Leader in Technology and Innovation Award in 2015, and in 2012, with the Life Time Achievement Award for his illustrious career in teaching, research, and administration, as well as for his contributions to the fields of engineering. The International Society for Productivity Enhancement also awarded him with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions in the field of concurrent engineering and engineering technology in 2016 and the Exceptional Achievement Award and Leader of Technology and Innovation in 2015. The International Society of Productivity Enhancement (ISPE) honored Dr. Ganesan as a fellow in 2014, and with the Best Service Award in 2014.
Additionally, SAE International commended Dr. Ganesan with the Lloyd L. Withrow Distinguished Speaker Award in 2012 and the Best Oral Presentation Award in 2006, 2009, 2010, and 2011. He also received the Best Paper Award by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Engineers in Training in 2001, and the Motorola Design Award--Top Ten by the HC12 Design Competition in 1998. Dr. Ganesan has also received special recognitions for his role in education, including the Best Professor of the Year Award at Oakland University in 2016, Best Professor of the Year by the Association of Scientists, Developers and Faculties and Bangkok in 2014, an Outstanding Teacher Award by the American Society for Engineering Education in 1999, and the Naim Kheir Best Teacher Award by the School of Engineering and Computer Science, Oakland University in 1999. Inspired by his father, a reputable physics professor, to pursue a life in academia, and his mother, who influenced his supportive nature, Dr. Ganesan has established himself as a reputable member of his field. He began his career as a research scientist at the National Aerospace Laboratories in India, and later decided to follow his passion for teaching, research, and sharing knowledge by pursuing a career in academia. He hopes to continue his research and professorship for years to come. He has been married to Mrs. Shanthi Ganesan for 42 years, and they have one son, Mr. Krishna Ganesan. In his spare time, he enjoys walking in the park and meditation.
