For more than 20 years, Dr. Ahn has served Kyungnam University, where he has held the position of professor of mechanical engineering at the university since 2010. Previously, he served the institution as a professor of chemical engineering from 2006 to 2010, associate professor of chemical engineering from 2000 to 2006, and assistant professor of chemical engineering from 1996 to 2000. He developed novel solution schemes such as FVM and FEM, and applied them to the extrusion process for polymers and the electro-discharge machining process. In 2004, he also developed a rubber-toughened nylon-6 nanocomposite during sabbatical leave at the University of Texas at Austin.
Dr. Ahn began his career at Kyungnam University as a full-time lecturer in chemical engineering in 1994. Prior to his work at the university, he served as a research associate at Hanwha R&E Center for three years. In 1993, for the first time in world automotive history, he developed the Glassfiber Mat Thermoplastic bumper back beam that passed the impact test standards regulated by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, and applied it to the Coupe Tiburon of Hyundai Motor Company. He was also a research and teaching assistant at the State University of New York, and researcher at Hyosung T&C Corporation from 1981 to 1984. In 1983, he was awarded the Special Prize for optimization of Nylon-6 polymerization reactors from Hyosung T&C Corp.
In 1991, Dr. Ahn graduated from the State University of New York with a PhD in Chemical Engineering. He received a Master of Science from Seoul National University in 1981 and a Bachelor of Science from Hanyang University in 1979. He has published numerous articles in professional journals.
Dr. Ahn was recognized as a Korea Ministry of Education Scholar from 1985 to 1987 and was the recipient of the Superior Award for Academia-Industrial Cooperation in 2006. In addition, he has been featured in Who's Who in Finance and Industry, Who's Who in Asia, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World.
Dr. Ahn is a member of American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Society of Plastics Engineers, the New York Academy of Sciences, the Korean Society of Rheology, and the Korean Institute of Chemical Engineers. In his spare time, he enjoys playing Korean chess, swimming, practicing martial arts, gardening, and floriculture.
