Over the course of more than 40 years, Dr. Hall has excelled in the field of academics, culminating in his current role as a history professor at Ball State University. At the start of his career, he worked for the University of Michigan as a lecturer in Asian Studies. In the late 1970s and 1980s, he lent his expertise to numerous institutions, including Elmira College (1976-1980), the State University of New York at Binghamton (1979-1980), Tufts University (1980-1983), the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (1983-1991), and Williams College (1990-1991) in visiting, assistant and associate professor roles. He has been an associate and professor of history at Ball State University since 991, with visiting professor appointments at the University of Leiden (1986), New York University (1989), the University of Chicago (2000, 2003, 2005), Gadjah Mada University, Indonesia (2003-2004), The Royal University of Phnom Penh (2013), and The National University of Singapore (2015).
A graduate of Albion College, Northern Illinois University, and The University of Michigan, Dr. Hall holds a Bachelor of Arts, a Master of Arts, and a PhD. Subsequently, he pursued postdoctoral work in comparative Asian studies. His professional affiliations include the Association for Asian Studies, the International Economic History Association, and The World History Association. He has served as associate editor and is currently a member of the advisory board of the Journal of the Economic and Social History of the Orient.
A globally recognized expert in early South and Southeast Asia and Indian Ocean history, he is the author and editor of numerous books and professional journal and collected volume publications. Dr. Hall has been the recipient of research grants through the National Endowment for the Humanities, Social Science Research Council, Fulbright Scholars Abroad program, and Association for South East Asian Nations (ASEAN). He continues to conduct archaeological field research in Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, and India, and is a member of the international Indian Ocean research consortium based in India.
