For more than 25 years, Dr. Rios-Velazquez has excelled in the field of research science. He is now a full professor in the biology department of the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, after 16 years as a formal faculty member and researcher there. Dr. Rios-Velazquez is known for his research laboratory in microbial biotechnology and bioprospecting at the University of Puerto Rico, and has been training both undergraduate and graduate students in research. He is the principal investigator of the laboratory.
At the start of his career, Dr. Rios-Velazquez worked for the Interamerican University at Arecibo as a faculty research professor, and supported programs at the university's San German location as a qualified assessor. These programs benefited research from secondary school students and teachers. Over the years, he worked for the University in a number of other positions, including qualified assessor for their Academy of Science Research. In 1994, he transferred to the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico at Ponce as a faculty member. Dr. Rios-Velazquez supported the Upward Bound Science and Mathematics Program as a professor for several courses at the Interamerican University of Puerto Rico at Ponce.
A graduate of the University of Puerto Rico and the University of Wisconsin, Dr. Rios-Velazquez holds a bachelor's degree in industrial microbiology, a master's degree in biology, and a PhD in bacteriology. He is professionally affiliated with the American Society for Microbiology, the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos/Latinos, and the Native Americans in Science (SACNAS). Throughout his career, he has been recognized many times for his work in the field. In 2006, Dr. Rios-Velazquez was featured in the 9th edition of Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and the 60th edition of Who's Who in America.
