Raytheon is a technology and innovation leader that specializes in defense, civil government, and cybersecurity solutions. Mr. Underwood entered law in 1980 as an attorney for the U.S. Army in the office of the staff judge advocate, later becoming a trial attorney in 1984. He went on as a senior associate with Doke & Riley in Dallas before working in the aerospace field, notably with Hughes Aircraft Company, Hughes Missile Systems Company, and Lockheed Martin International Launch Services. He also taught as professor of business at Piedmont College in Georgia for one year, and served as chief of acquisition and business law for U.S. Army Space Command, director of contracts and export compliance for Ball Aerospace and Technologies Corporation, as well as senior director of contracts for Express Scripts, Inc., in Saint Louis.
Admitted to practice by the Alabama Bar Association in 1980, the U.S. Court of Military Appeals in 1981, and the Supreme Court of the United States in 1983, Mr. Underwood remains active in the legal community as a member of the American Bar Association, where he has served as vice chair on various committees in the public contract law section. He is also the author of the 1980 book "A Progressive History of the Young Men's Business Club of Birmingham, Alabama: 1946-1970."
Highly educated, Mr. Underwood holds a BA from the University of North Alabama, an MA in history and a JD from Samford University, an MS in applied behavioral counseling from Johns Hopkins University, and an LLM from The Judge Advocate General's School in jurisprudence. Mr. Underwood also studied federal procurement law, LL.m studies, and earned a master's certificate in government contracting from George Washington University. He dedicated 23 years to the military from 1980 to 2003, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Army Reserves.
Among his many accomplishments, Mr. Underwood is noted for bringing fraud, waste and abuse claims against a contractor who manufactured defective 30-round magazines for the Army's M-16 rifle, and for serving as a high-profile criminal defense attorney for the chief of anesthesiology at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center at the time. He was successful in both instances, and was later offered a U.S. Presidential appointment as deputy assistant secretary of state for export controls in the George W. Bush administration. In the aerospace field, he was lead in the negotiations for multi-billion dollar procurement for the next generation NASA Hubble Space Telescope.
In his community, Mr. Underwood devotes his time to a next generation of a different sort as Eagle Scout adult leader for the Boy Scouts of America and a Sunday school teacher of Adult Gospel Doctrine at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. He is a mentor with the National Contract Management Association as well as the Society for International Affairs. Highlighted in more than a dozen issues of Who's Who in Finance and Business, Who's Who in America, Who's Who in American Law, Who's Who in the West, and Who's Who in the World, Mr. Underwood is happily married to Loriaynn Underwood.
