WOODS HOLE, MA, November 20, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present John E. Hobbie, PhD, with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Dr. Hobbie celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Since 1976, Dr. Hobbie has served as a senior research scientist at the Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL). The MBL was founded in Woods Hole, MA, in 1888 as a non-profit institution dedicated to scientific discovery by exploring fundamental biology, biodiversity and the environment, and informing the human condition through research and education. In 2014 the MBL became affiliated with the University of Chicago. At the MBL, Dr. Hobbie joined the Ecosystems Center and became director of the Center in 1984 and Co-director in 1989. In 2006 he was appointed Distinguished Scientist.

Dr. Hobbie's research as an aquatic ecologist has attempted to identify the factors controlling decomposition and productivity within aquatic ecosystems. Mostly interested in the role natural assemblages of microbes play in ecosystems, he began studying this issue over 50 years ago when he co-developed and applied methods for measuring the kinetics of uptake of organic compounds by bacteria using radiolabelled substrates. He later developed methods for measuring the mineralization of organic compounds to CO2, and visualized and enumerated bacteria present in natural water samples using DNA specific stains (acridine orange and DAPI). Dr. Hobbie has published numerous articles as a result of his studies.

His research experience in oceans, lakes, and arctic ecosystems, have led to his service on the board of directors of the U.S. Arctic Research Commission, as chair of the Florida Bay Scientific Oversight Panel, as a two-time president of the Association of Ecosystems Research Centers, on the board of the International Long-Term Ecological Research Network, and as president of the American Society of Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO). He has received the ASLO Hutchinson Award for Research and the ASLO Redfield Award for Lifetime Achievement as well as the Estuarine Research Federation Odum Award for Lifetime Contributions.

Dr. Hobbie completed his undergraduate studies at Dartmouth College in 1957, and later earned a Master of Art at the University of California Berkeley, and PhD at Indiana University. He first worked for the University of California Davis after college as a research associate, then spent time as a National Institutes of Health postdoctoral fellow at Uppsala University in Sweden before getting into academia as an assistant and associate professor at North Carolina State University from 1965 and 1971. Promoted to full professor, he remained at the university until 1976.

In the early 1970s, Dr. Hobbie spent a year as a National Science Foundation postdoctoral fellow at the Norwegian Institute of Water Research and in 1989-1990 as the Tage Erlander visiting professor in the Asko Laboratory of the University of Stockholm. Dr. Hobbie has also been featured in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in Science and Engineering.

In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, John E. Hobbie, PhD, has been featured on the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
