Since 2015, Dr. Kaplan has held the title of member emeritus and clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Institute for Academic Medicine at Houston Methodist Hospital. He previously served the institute as a full member from 2005 to 2015, as professor of obstetrics and gynecology from 2014 to 2015, and as a staff member from 1964 to 2015. At the same time, he held the position of professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Weill Cornell Medicine at Cornell University from 2005 to 2015. He has also held the title of professor emeritus in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Baylor College of Medicine since 2010.
For more than 35 years, Dr. Kaplan served in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Baylor College in a wide range of capacities. He was director of the Division of Gynecological Oncology from 1979 to 2005, professor from 1979 to 2005, associate professor from 1963 to 1979, and assistant professor from 1963 to 1968. He also served in Baylor College's Department of Radiology as an assistant professor from 1995 to 2005. Outside of his career in healthcare education, Dr. Kaplan has served as a staff member of multiple institutions, including Ben Taub General Hospital at Harris Health from 1964 to 2015, and CHI St. Luke's Health from 1964 to 2008. He is also a United States army veteran, having served as captain in the Medical Corps from 1959 to 1961.
Dr. Kaplan received a Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University in 1955 as well as a Bachelor of Arts from the Washington and Lee University in 1951. After graduating with his Doctor of Medicine, he served as an intern at Jackson Health System for one year. He completed his residency of obstetrics and gynecology at Columbia University Medical Center/New York-Presbyterian Hospital, serving as senior resident from 1961 to 1963 and as an assistant resident from 1956 to 1959. He also served the hospital as a fellow in surgical oncology from 1962 to 1963.
Dr. Kaplan was recognized as a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Incorporated in 1974 and 2000. He is also a diplomate of the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Incorporated in 1966 and 2000. He is licensed to practice medicine in the state of Texas. He has contributed articles to medical journals, authored chapters in books, and has held numerous presentations on topics in his field.
Dr. Kaplan is an active member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons, the International Society for the Study of Vulvovaginal Disease, the International Gynecologic Cancer Society, and the European Society of Gynecological Oncology. Furthermore, he maintains affiliation with the American Urogynecologic Society, the Houston Surgical Society, the International College of Surgeons, and the Texas Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He also is involved with the Central Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Cancer Society, Incorporated, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, the Harris County Medical Society, and the Houston Gynecological and Obstetrical Society. Dr. Kaplan was a founding member of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology in 1971, and currently remains a member of the organization.
Dr. Kaplan has been recognized for his outstanding contributions to his industry and community with awards and commendations from various organizations. He has been recognized in Houston's Top Doctors for Women since 2016, Texas Super Doctors since 2006, and as one of the Best Doctors in America from 1955 to 2003. Houston Methodist Hospital commended him with the Women's Health Event Award in 2015, the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2014, the Faculty of the Year Award in 2014, the John W. Overstreet: MD Award in 2007, and the establishment of an endowed chair and annual lectureship in his name. Baylor College of Medicine also commended Dr. Kaplan with numerous awards for his contributions to the institution, including the Golden Forceps Award from 2003 to 2004, the Faculty Medical Student Educator of the Year Award from 1999 to 2001, the Faculty Recognition Award from 1989 to 1992, the Resident Appreciation Award from 1994 to 1997, and as a Distinguished Faculty Member from 1978 to 1983.
Additionally, Dr. Kaplan was honored as Physician of the Quarter by CHI St. Luke's Health in 1994, the Partners in Courage Award of Achievement by the American Cancer Society, Incorporated in 1998, and with the President's Award by the Houston Gynecological and Obstetrical Foundation in 1955. Dr. Kaplan has been married to Cissie Rauch Kaplan since 2004. They have four children together: John, Robert, Gary and Janet and five grandchildren: Allison, Lindsey, Katie, Shelby and Natalie.
