A psychiatrist and educator who studied in his homeland of Croatia, Dr. Kalogjera completed an MD at the University of Zagreb in 1970 and an internship at the University of Zagreb from 1970 to 1971. Relocating to the United States to complete his studies, Dr. Kalogjera completed his residency in psychiatry at the Medical College of Wisconsin as well as a fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati before forming his own private practice in Rockford, IL, which he maintained for three years. By 1979, Dr. Kalogjera went back to the Medical College of Wisconsin where he accepted an appointment as the director of the adolescent in-patient unit, and as the director of adolescent in-patient service. Two years later, he formed his second private practice, this time in adult, child, and adolescent psychiatry in Wauwatosa, WI, where he remains today.
A diplomate by the American Board of Addiction Medicine and in psychiatry and child and adolescent psychiatry by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, Dr. Kalogjera is affiliated with Aurora Psychiatric Hospital in Wauwatosa, WI. In 1988, he co-authored an article in the American Journal of Psychotherapy. In 1989, he wrote an article entitled "Hospital and Community Psychiatry," and later contributed a chapter in "Disordered Couple" in 1998.
Credited with founding and serving as a leader of the Milwaukee Group for the Advancement of Self-Psychology in 1991, Dr. Kalogjera is also an honorary staff member at Aurora Psychiatric Hospital since 1999, and clinical professor of psychiatry at the Medical College of Wisconsin since 2001. He formerly taught as an assistant clinical professor and associate clinical professor from 1981 to 2001. He has additionally served as a consultant throughout his local community, with organizations like the Lutheran Social Services, the Jewish Family Service, and Family Service, all in Milwaukee, WI.
Dr. Kalogjera has been the recipient of a multitude of awards during his tenure. He has been named One of America's Best Physicians by the National Consumer Advisory Board in 2016 and 2017, was named to Top 10 Doctors in 2014, and was named to America's Top Psychiatrists by the Consumers Research Council of America in 2002-2012. He received a Distinguished Service Award by the Medical College of Wisconsin in 2014, an Award for Teaching in the department of psychiatry and behavioral medicine in 1992, and a Golden Apple Teaching Award in 1996 and 2000.
A Distinguished Lifetime Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Dr. Kalogjera is also a founding fellow of the Academy of Cognitive Therapy and recipient of a Most Compassionate Doctor Patients' Choice Award from 2012 to 2016. He is a Distinguished Lifetime Fellow of the American Academy of Child Psychiatry, and a member of the Wisconsin Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the International Association of Psychoanalytic Self-Psychology, and the American Society of Addiction Medicine.
He has been listed in Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the World numerous times. After arriving in the United States in 1972, he married his wife, Araceli with whom he has one child. He loves boating, travel, movies, and theater, and he speaks several languages. He attributes his success to his exceptional mother, wife and daughter.
