Richard C. Friedman Recognized by Marquis Who's Who for Excellence in Psychiatry

Richard C. Friedman was the first investigator to demonstrate that prolonged sleep deprivation adversely affects the performance and mood of physicians



    NEW YORK, NY, November 28, 2017 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Richard Friedman has been included in Marquis Who's Who. In a career that has spanned more than five decades Dr. Friedman is highly regarded for his expertise in all areas of psychiatry. He is an outstanding clinician and educator and has made major contributions to research and scholarship in the areas of medical education, depression, human sexuality, and psychoanalysis.

An award winner, he achieved recognition as a Teacher of The Year at Weill Cornell University Medical College and has been the recipient of Best Doctor in America awards from Castle Connolly Medical Ltd on numerous occasions. Dr. Friedman demonstrates excellence in numerous roles, including clinical professor of psychiatry at Weill Cornell University Medical College, adjunct research professor of psychology at Derner Institute of Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University, and Lecturer in psychiatry at Columbia University. Dr. Friend is also certified by Columbia Psychoanalytic Center in 1972 and as been on the faculty Columbia Psychoanalytic Center from 1973 to the present.

Upon graduation from Bronx High School of Science, Dr. Friedman received a National Merit Scholarship and used it to attend Bard College where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1961. He received his medical degree from University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in 1966.

Dr. Friedman became a psychiatric resident at New York State Psychiatric Institute and Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in 1967. He completed his residency there and was Chief Resident in Psychiatry in 1969-70. Dr. Friedman then became chief of in-patient psychiatry at William Beaumont Army Medical center and went on to join the faculty as instructor of clinical psychiatry at the college of Physicians and Surgeons in 1972. Prior to becoming a clinical professor at Weill Cornell Medical College, he was assistant professor of public health at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University, associate psychiatrist at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center and Associate psychiatrist at New York Hospital, Weill Cornell Medical Center.

In recognition of his professional excellence Dr. Friedman earned the 2009 Presidential Award from the American Academy of Psychoanalysis and Dynamic Psychiatry and also in 2009 received the Sigourney Award from the Sigourney Trust in recognition of distinguished contributions to the field of psychoanalysis.

A research study, carried out during his residency was published in the New England Journal of Medicine and influenced sleep schedules of physicians -in-training throughout the world. Dr. Friedman then went on to carry out research on the biology and psychology of sexual orientation and also on depression and suicidality in young people. He went on to publish 92 articles and book chapters and has edited four books on sexuality. He has also written two books. The first book, "Male Homosexuality: A Contemporary Psychoanalytic Perspective" was published by Yale University Press in 1988. This was the first publication that integrates psychoanalytic theory and practice with psycho-neuro-endocrinology and sexology. It present concepts and evidence indication that homosexuality is not pathological contrary to older psychoanalytic views). Dr. Friedman's second book, co-authored with Jennifer I. Downey MD, "Sexual Orientation and Psychoanalysis" was published by Columbia University Press in 2002, and was later published as "Sexual Orientation and Psychodynamic Psychotherapy" in 2008. In this volume Friedman and Downey discuss the Oedipus complex in light of modern advances in psycho-endocrinology. They also discuss clinical aspects of stigma and internalized homophobia.

Richard C. Friedman lives and works in NYC where he is working on his third book and maintains an active psychoanalytic practice.
