Dr. Johnston currently works as a Research Microbiologist in the Virology Division of the United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID). A graduate of the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry and Utica College of Syracuse University, Dr. Johnston holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology, and a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology. Over the years, she has also mentored students at USAMRIID on various procedures and policies in Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4) maximum containment laboratories, and lent her expertise as a teaching assistant at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry. Throughout the course of her career as a Research Microbiologist, she has had her work featured in prestigious publications such as the Journal of Infectious Diseases, the Journal of Clinical Virology, the Journal of Bioterrorism and Biodefense, and the Journal of Virology. Utilizing her expertise in the field, she has published numerous scientific papers, including "Dose Response of MARV/Angola Infection in Cynomolgus Macaques following IM or Aerosol Exposure," "Detailed Analysis of the African Green Monkey Model of Nipah Disease," and "Cytokine Modulation Correlates with Severity of Monkeypox Disease in Humans." As a principal investigator and study director, she has been involved in numerous studies evaluating the efficacy of vaccines and therapeutics against a variety of pathogens including Ebola virus, Marburg virus, and Nipah virus. In 2015, she received a recognition award for involvement in the USAMRIID response to the Ebola virus disease outbreak in Western Africa. When she is not in the lab, Dr. Johnston serves the community of Frederick, Maryland, as a volunteer firefighter and emergency medical technician. She is also a volunteer member of the Frederick County Advanced Technical Rescue Team.
