Dr. Notter is currently Professor Emeritus of Pediatrics and Environmental Medicine at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He has had a professional career spanning 45 years in biomedical and bioengineering research and education. He initially joined the faculty of Chemical Engineering and the Bioengineering Program at Penn State University as an assistant professor in 1971, and then completed medical training at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He joined the Rochester faculty as an assistant professor of pediatrics and associate professor of chemical engineering in 1980, and was subsequently promoted to the ranks of professor of pediatrics, environmental medicine, chemical engineering, and biomedical engineering at the University. He is the author of over 300 scientific publications, as well as the research text "Lung Surfactants: Basic Science and Clinical Applications" (2000). Dr. Notter also co-edited the research text "Lung Surfactant Replacement Therapy" (1989), and was senior editor of the book "Lung Injury: Mechanisms, Pathophysiology and Therapy" (2005). He also served as the director of the biomedical engineering program, director of neonatology research, and director of the National Institutes of Health Special Center of Research in lung biology and disease in infants and children during his tenure at the University of Rochester.
Over his career, Dr. Notter has received numerous awards related to his research. He has been the recipient of a National Science Foundation undergraduate research award, an undergraduate award from the American Society for Testing and Materials, a National Institutes of Health bioengineering postdoctoral fellowship award, a Young Investigator award from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute of NIH, an MD Distinction in Research award from the University of Rochester, a Research Career Development Award from the National Institutes of Health, and a Health Leadership Award in research from the March of Dimes. He has also been awarded and directed multiple individual and program research grants from the National Institutes of Health covering nearly 40 years of Federal research funding.
Dr. Notter attended Stanford University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in 1964 and a Master of Science in 1965. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Washington in 1969, and an MD with distinction in research from the University of Rochester in 1980. During his career, Dr. Notter has also been a member of numerous professional and honor societies including the American Medical Association, the American Institute of Chemists, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the Perinatal Research Society, and the Society for Pediatric Research.
