Mr. Scanlon was born in Houma, Louisiana, but spent most of his life in Jackson, where he graduated from Central High School in 1953. He graduated from Louisiana State University with a Bachelor of Science in geology in 1957. While there, he was president of the College of Arts and Sciences, a member of the varsity tennis team, and a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity. Mr. Scanlon also served in the student senate. He then attended the University of Mississippi School of Law and graduated with an LLB, with distinction, in 1960. During law school, he was a member of the editorial board of the Mississippi Law Journal, a member of the moot court board, president of his class, the law school student body president, a member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity, a member of the Phi Kappa Phi honorary scholarship society, and a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa honorary leadership fraternity.
Mr. Scanlon then performed his active military duty. On his return, he was assigned to the Eleventh Judge Advocate General Corps in the U.S. Army Reserve, in which he earned the rank of captain. In 1962, Mr. Scanlon began a very fulfilling career in law, and was associated with the Jackson law firm of Satterfield, Shell, Williams and Buford for two years before forming the firm that would become Young, Scanlon, and Sessums, P.A. In 1995, he and three other partners formed the firm of Scanlon, Sessums, Parker, and Dallas PLLC. In 2003, he became a member of Watkins and Eager, PLLC, a full-service, diversified law firm that offers extensive real estate, banking, corporate, and business practices, as well as broad trial and appellate practices. Mr. Scanlon's expertise was in alternative dispute resolutions, bankruptcy and creditor-debtor rights law, and business litigation. He was listed as an approved arbitrator and mediator by the Mississippi Supreme Court and was a member of the American Arbitration Association as well as the National Arbitration Forum.
During his career, Mr. Scanlon served as chairman of the Mississippi Law Institute, as well as chairman and commissioner for the Mississippi Commission on Judicial Performance. He was a fellow of two organizations with invitation only admission, the American College of Trial Lawyers and the International Society of Barristers. He wrote case notes for the Mississippi Law Journal and the Mississippi College Law Review. Mr. Scanlon was an instructor at the Jackson School of Law, later the Mississippi College School of Law, in the early 1960s. He held the position of president of the Mississippi Junior Bar, the Jackson Junior Bar, the Mississippi chapter of the Federal Bar Association, the Hinds County Bar Association, the Mississippi Bankruptcy Conference, the Mississippi Bar Foundation Inc., the Mississippi State Bar Association, the Lamar Order, and the Ole Miss Law Alumni. In addition, he was a member of the American Bar Association House of Delegates. Mr. Scanlon was also a fellow of the Mississippi Bar Foundation, the American Bar Foundation, and the Mississippi Young Lawyers Association.
Mr. Scanlon was the recipient of the 1986 Law Alumnus of the Year award and was inducted into the University of Mississippi School of Law Hall of Fame in 2013. In 2016, he was honored with the Professionalism Award from the Mississippi Bar Foundation. Mr. Scanlon's other recognitions include being listed in the 1983 Best Lawyers of America and in the book's following revisions, as well as several volumes of Marquis Who's Who. He helped with the Huricane Camille Organization in its relief fund on the Gulf Coast. In addition to mentoring young lawyers, Mr. Scanlon helped form a scholarship fund to the University of Mississippi School of Law from his class of 1960. He twice served on the vestry of St. James Episcopal Church. Mr. Scanlon's personal interests included tennis, golf, and bridge, in which he was an excellent player. Pat. H. Scanlon passed away on February 25, 2017.
