Dr. Kaplan is a pioneer in ophthalmology research and education. For more than 15 years, he has worked as the William H. Blondina F. Evans Professor of Ophthalmology and as chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. He was a professor of ophthalmology at the Washington University School of Medicine and served as chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences for 10 years. He was an associate professor in the Department of Ophthalmology and the Department of Microbioogy at Emory University School of Medicine, and he also served as both a professor and director of research for the ophthalmology department. Early in his career, Dr. Kaplan was an assistant professor in the Department of Cell Biology at the University of Texas Medical School (Southwestern Medical School, Dallas). He started his career as a surgical resident at Bellevue Hospital at the New York University Medical Center, and interned in medicine at Lakeside Hospital, University Hospitals of Cleveland, Case-Western Reserve University.
Dr. Kaplan graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Columbia University in 1964 and received a medical degree from Cornell University in 1968. He became a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1979. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

He serves as an associate editor of Translational Vision Science & Technology, as past editor of Ocular Immunology and Inflammation, and is a scientific reviewer for Nature, Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, Retina, American Journal of Ophthalmology, Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Current Eye Research, and Experimental Eye Research. Dr. Kaplan was the president of the American Uveitis Society, and a member of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, American Association of Immunologists, American Medical Association, Macula Society, Retina Society, American Society of Retina Specialists, Louisville Ophthalmology Society, Kentucky Academy Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.
Dr. Kaplan was a Retina-Vitreous Fellow in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Medical College of Wisconsin. He completed a National Institutes of Health fellowship in immunology at the University of Texas Medical School (Dallas). Further, he is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a gold fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology.
Dr. Kaplan is a U.S. Air Force Veteran, having served from 1970 to 1972, as a captain in the Medical Corps. He has been married to Adele Lotner for more than 50 years. The couple have three children, Wendi Suzanne, Todd Daniel, and Ariane Dev, and six grandchildren, Noah, Emma, Lilah, Asher, Ava, and Rosie.
Dr. Kaplan received achievement awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology in 1984 and 1994, a lifetime achievement honor award in 2012, and a special recognition award in 2015. In 1987, he was presented with the Science Award from the Alcon Research Institute, and in 1984, he was named the Olga Keith Weiss Research to Prevent Blindness Scholar.
