Dr. Thomashow is a professor of medicine, medical co-director at the Jo-Ann LeBuhn Center for Chest Disease, and medical director of the New York-Presbyterian lung reduction program in emphysema at Columbia University Medical Center (CUMC). He is Board certified in internal medicine and pulmonary disease, and specializes in pulmonary disease medicine and has clinical expertise in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), emphysema, asthma, and interstitial lung disease.
Dr. Thomashow helped found and currently serves as chairman of the board of directors of the COPD Foundation. He is the co-chair for the New York State COPD Coalition, he co-chaired the New York State COPD Summit in 2010, COPD7 USA 2011 in Washington, D.C., COPD8USA 2013, COPD9USA, COPD10USA in Chicago, and the COPD Foundation COPD Readmission Summit in 2013 and 2015. He is a former member of the executive committee of the medical board of the New York-Presbyterian Hospital, and for many years chaired the quality care committee for the Society of Practitioners of the Columbia University Medical Center. He chaired the Respiratory Disease Council of the New York-Presbyterian Healthcare Network and co-chaired the New York Presbyterian smoking cessation initiative for many years. He is a former member of the steering committee and the co-primary investigator at the Columbia site for the National Emphysema Treatment Trial, and he remains involved in multiple national clinical research projects.
Some of Dr. Thomashow's research interests have been specific to COPD, lung volume reduction, exercise physiology, and optical electronic plethymography. He has authored numerous articles in his field, including in the Journal of General Medicine, the Journal of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, and the Respiratory Physiology Neurobiology.
Dr. Thomashow completed his undergraduate degree at Columbia College in 1970, MD at the College of Physicians and Surgeons at Columbia University in 1974, internship, residency, and chief residency at Roosevelt Hospital between 1974 and 1978, followed by a senior pulmonary fellowship at Harlem Hospital from 1978 to 1979. He then served as an assistant attending physician at Presbyterian Hospital at the Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center in New York City for 11 years before serving as an associate attending physician for another eight years. During this 20-year span, Dr. Thomashow also spent eight years as a physician-in-charge at TBC Clinic at the Presbyterian Hospital from 1983 to 1990.
Dr. Thomashow is an elected fellow of the American College of Physicians and the American College of Chest Physicians. He is a former executive committee member and former chairman of the membership committee of the New York Trudeau Society, and longstanding member of the American Thoracic Society.
Awarded with a Stony Wold-Herbert Fund Fellowship during 1978 and 1979, he also received a 2002 Alfred Markowitz Service Award by the Society of Practitioners CPMC, a 2005 Man of Good Conscience Award by the National Society of Women Psychiatrists. Columbia University awarded Dr. Thomashow with a professorship named in his honor, the Byron M. Thomashow Clinical Professorship of Medicine in 2006. He was also honored with 2008 Columbia University Ewing Clinical Scholar, a 2013 American Thoracic Society Public Advisory Roundtable Excellence Award, and a 2014 Vitals Patients' Choice Award.
Dr. Thomashow has been cited in more than 30 editions of Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, and Who's Who in the East, Dr. Thomashow has also been named to Best Doctors in New York By New York Magazine from 1991 and 2015, to The Best New York Metro Area Doctors by Castle Connolly from 1997 and 2015, and Best Doctors in America by Castle Connolly from 2001 and 2015, to New York Super Doctors from 2008 and 2015.
