Labor economist and professor emerita in the graduate school of education at Stanford University for the past 10 years, Dr. Strober was also a professor of economics in the graduate school of business by courtesy, where she teaches a course called GSBGEN 576 Work and Family. As the founding director of the Stanford Center for Research on Women, now the Michelle R. Clayman Institute for Gender Research, her research and consulting work focused on various issues at the workplace, work and family, and multidisciplinary in higher education.
Dr. Strober was first hired at Stanford as an assistant professor in the graduate school of business in 1972. In 1978 she became associate professor in the Stanford University School of Education, now the Graduate School of Education, and later became professor. She eventually earned the opportunity to serve as director of the joint degree program, a Master's program where students earn both an MA in Education and an MBA from the graduate school of business. She also served as chair of the program in administration and policy analysis, associate dean for academic affairs, and acting dean. On leave for two years between 1998 and 2000, Dr. Strober served as program officer in higher education at Atlantic Philanthropic Services, now Atlantic Philanthropies, in Ithaca, NY. Before joining Stanford she taught as a lecturer at the University of Maryland at College Park and the University of California, Berkeley, between 1967 and 1972.
In 1982, Dr. Strober became the founding chair of the National Council for Research on Women, which consisted of approximately 65 U.S. centers for research on women and today boasts more than 100 centers. She was also the president of the International Association for Feminist Economics and vice president of the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund, now Legal Momentum. Since 1976, she has consulted for several corporations on improved utilization of women in management and on work-family issues and has been an expert witness in cases involving the valuation of work in the home, sex discrimination, and sexual harassment. She has also spent time on a number of committees and boards, most recently the board of trustees of Mills College from 2004 to 2013, and the board of the Gideon Hausner Jewish Day School from 2006 to 2008.
Dr. Strober authored and co-authored numerous books, including "Sharing the Work: What My Family and Career Taught Me About Breaking Through and Holding the Door Open for Others" published by MIT Press in 2016, and "Interdisciplinary Conversations: Challenging Habits of Thought," published by Stanford University Press in 2010. With Agnes Chan, Dr. Strober is the co-author of the book, "The Road Winds Uphill all the Way: Gender, Work, and Family in the United States and Japan" published by MIT Press in 1999. It was translated into Japanese by Momoi Rumiko, and published by K.K. Kyodo News in 2003. Dr. Strober has also authored numerous articles on women's employment, families, and childcare, occupational segregation by gender, management, economics education, and feminist economics. Additionally, she has served as member of the editorial board, as associate editor, member of the editorial advisory board, and on the board of editors for a number of journals, including as associate editor of Feminist Economics.
Dr. Strober holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Labor Relations from Cornell University, a Master of Arts in economics from Tufts University, and a PhD in economics from MIT. Formerly serving on the board of directors for the Center for Gender Equality, the board of directors for the legal defense and education fund for the National Organization for Women, and the committee on the status of women in the economics profession for the American Economic Association, Dr. Strober has also been a longstanding member of the International Association of Feminist Economics.
A former Stanford University fellow and Schiff House resident fellow, Dr. Strober has been included in countless editions of Who's Who, including every edition of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in the West since 1996, and many editions of Who's Who in American Education and Who's Who of American Women. Dr. Strober is married, and is the mother of two children.
