Dr. Ando is now the chief senior researcher of the Biomedical Research Institute at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) in Ikeda, Japan. He has been with AIST since 2001, starting as a senior researcher with the Photonics Research Institute and working with the Health Research Institute there from 2010 to 2015. Dr. Ando was named a chief senior researcher of the Health Research Institute in 2013, and went on to his current role in 2015. He is well known for the development of novel optochemical sensor materials, nonlinear optical materials and luminescent nanomaterials. These technologies have applications in optical gas sensors, the photonics and electronics industry with lasers and phosphors, as well as the medical field as cell labeling and imaging.
Dr. Ando was born in Amagasaki and raised in Nishinomiya in the Hyogo prefecture of Japan, to Joichi and Hisako Ando. He matriculated at nearby Kyoto University and earned a Bachelor of Science in hydrocarbon chemistry in 1985. Dr. Ando went on to earn a master's degree, followed by a certified Doctor of Engineering (PhD) in chemistry with a focus in molecular engineering from Kyoto University in 1990. That year, he was accepted as a fellow with the Science and Technology Agency of Japan, and in 1991, he joined the Osaka National Research Institute, affiliated with AIST as well as the Ministry of International Trade and Industry. Dr. Ando was made senior researcher in 1994, and in the same year married Yoko Yamaguchi. He briefly worked with the Research Development Corporation of Japan from 1992 to 1994, and with the French Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique at L' École Normale Superieure de Cachan for a joint research stay in 1998. He also conducted successful joint research with Vienna University of Technology in Austria and University of Regensburg in Germany. Dr. Ando joined AIST in 2001.
Dr. Ando is a leader in the field of functional nanomaterial chemistry and optics technology at the molecular level, and has published numerous papers involving the enhancing of optical gas sensitivity with semiconductor nanoparticles, gold nanoparticles and conducting polymers, the improvement of sensors for the detection of various chemicals suspended in air, as well as the preparation of glass embedded with photoluminescent nanocrystals. He is a member of the Chemical Society of Japan, which named him the recipient of the 1996 Young Chemist Award. Dr. Ando is a former member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of the Electrochemical Society of Japan, the Japan Society of Applied Physics, the Ceramic Society of Japan, the Catalysis Society of Japan, the Society of Nano Science and Technology, and the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers. He was formerly a member of the Society of Polymer Science, Japan.
For ingenuity and innovation in the field of optochemical engineering, Dr. Ando was selected for inclusion in five volumes of Who's Who in the World from 1999 to 2007, three volumes of Who's Who in Science and Engineering from 1998 to 2006, and two volumes of Who's Who in Asia in 2007 and 2012.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to his profession and the Marquis Who's Who community, Dr. Ando has been featured on the Marquis Who's Who Lifetime Achievers website. Please visit www.ltachievers.com for more information about this honor.
