Dr. Rodriguez works as a Professor of Genetics and Molecular Biology at the University of California Davis in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology. Topics he teaches include genes and gene expression, nutritional genomics, and the fundamentals and applications of biotechnology. His research interests include the molecular biology of health and disease, nutritional genomics, and plant biotechnology. In 2009, he established the Global HealthShare Initiative, a UC Davis-based humanitarian program dedicated to promoting health and wellness in the developing countries around the world.
Dr. Rodriquez earned his BA in Biology from California State University, Fresno in 1969 before going on to obtain a PhD in Biology from the University of California, Santa Cruz. His postdoctoral experience at UC San Francisco laid the foundation for the modern biotechnology industry. After many years of documented achievements in the fields of biotechnology and genomics, he was awarded in 2009, an honorary PhD from NAIST in Japan. He is a Fellow with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a member of the American Chemical Society, and lifetime member of the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) and the Society for Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE).
Dr. Rodriguez has written many articles and books on the regulation of gene expression in bacteria, plants and humans. His most cited article, "Construction and characterization of new cloning vehicles. II. A multipurpose cloning system (pBR322), 1977. Gene, 2:95 has been cited over 5600 times. Dr. Rodriguez's most recent article published in the Nature journal Science of Food is entitled "Impact of Diet-derived Signaling Molecules on Human Cognition: Exploring the Food-Brain Axis." Dr. Rodriguez's other research achievements have been published in the Nature, Proceedings of the National Academy of Science USA, The Plant Journal, Journal of Bacteriology, Journal of Biological Chemistry and the British Journal of Nutrition.
Dr. Rodriguez has received numerous awards for his professional and scientific accomplishments but in 2016, he was the recipient the "Principles of Community Award" from the UC Davis College of Biological Sciences. This award recognized Dr. Rodriguez's lifelong commitment to advancing the careers of underrepresented individuals and women in STEM disciplines. Looking toward the future, he intends to expand upon his already innovative research and professional activities.
